Media trade hot takes are gospel:

Patriots Trade Grade: A+

I honestly do not understand why the Carolina Panthers would make this deal. I know that Kony Ealy has been inconsistent throughout the first three years of his career, but they gave him away for pretty much nothing.

In this deal, the Patriots sent the Panthers their second round pick (64th overall) and they get Kony Ealy and the Panthers third-round pick (72nd overall). Basically, the Patriots just traded down eight spots and added a potential impact player at a major position of need.

Ealy was a second-round selection by the Panthers (60th overall) back in 2014. He shows impressive quickness and athleticism on the edge and has the ability to put consistent pressure on the passer. However, Ealy has never reached his full potential on the field.

Through three seasons, Ealy 14 career regular season stats. The biggest game of his career came in Super Bowl 50 when Ealy sacked Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning three times. Maybe all Ealy needs is extra motivation to produce? He will certainly play in many big-time games with the Patriots.

Ealy is not a guaranteed stud or anything like that, but he is a talented player with some nice upside. The Patriots basically acquired him for free. Defensive end is an obvious position of need for New England and Ealy is undoubtedly a strong addition to the mix.

Walter Football is not a respectable media outlet and they are lampooned by reputable sources. Thank you for posting this. Don't forget, they said Jimmy Clausen was the second coming of Joe Montana.

What is the problem people have with this trade? I wouldve preferred the contract to be for $4 million and not $5 million but other than that? Im one of the people too who think Worley still has potential to be solid and wouldve liked to see what he does with more experience, but i don't necessarily have a problem with this trade. We need a veteran who we know what we can expect from. Hope Byrd still gets playing time.

They had the same amount of targets but Sammy had 8 Tds Smith had 2 and People see Smith as a guy who has reached his peak and passed his prime while Watkins hasn't managed to hit those marks yet

i think most Panthers fans wanted Watkins at a reasonable deal also

Nothing is saying we can't have Watkins too. He is probably going to get 15 million a year from someone though and with his injury history that will be a huge risk.

The only thing I can say positive about this is that Worley isn't a big loss. I liked Seymour just as much if not more.

I still say that our focus should be trying to improve both safety positions significantly. You can hide a Seymour or Worley in zone if you have good line and good safeties. Make it happen.

Dude the Eagles were about to cut Torrey Smith. Panthers could have gotten him without trading Worley

Good trade, if guys think he was gonna go for less than 5 million in the open market you're delusional, and if you look at the deal MARQUES GOODWIN got at almost 10 million per year, you can only imagine what Watkins, and Robinson's markets will be.

This is a good trade, we brought in a veteran presence to pair with - Funch / Samuel / Byrd/ Draft Pick

He's still a legitimate NFL deep threat, and has a pedigree better than when we brought Ginn in. This also freed up a spot for a veteran DB to fill as I believe we will be looking for experience to play next to Bradberry.

Day Grade- B

Here is what it means to the Panthers, and why it is smart:

1.  Worley was headed to the bench or worse.  If we had him in our plans, we do not make this trade.  Remember, 3 players have had vocal protests that surfaced under Rivera's tenure--1.  Kelvin Benjamin (was actually benched for part of a key game); 2. Daryl Worley (about being replaced by Seymour); and 3. Captain Munnerlyn (about playing time).  With Elder on the rise, Capt. could be next.  With Smith, we lose a liability and gain a potential strength.

2. Torrey Smith has a contract for $5m per year, which is a lot for his production recently.  However, he is cheaper than what we would get in free agency, where Richardson or Wallace would command higher salaries.  Good news:  Only $500,000 of Smith's contract is guaranteed, so it could be reworked and there is no risk should we cut him.  What did we lose, in the end? Worley.

3. Smith is a deep threat.  He is the veteran deep threat we could use.  Does he solve all the problems? Probably not, but we have Samuel and Funchess, too, with CMC also a threat.  Look for a stud TE in  the draft to keep from overlapping talent.   Do we draft a WR early?  Don't think so.  We needed a deep threat veteran WR, and we got one.  Is he an upgrade from Worley?  I think so.
