Nope. I'd rather give Samuel those snaps. They're basically the same player and Samuel is younger with more upside.

The hypocrisy of your posting today is laughable...

Smith?  We needed him b/c byrd/samuels live in a hospital.

Tavon Austin?  Nah, I'd rather give those snaps to Samuel.

He ended up on IR twice in one season. If that's not a red flag, what is? As far as I know, it still hasn't even been announced exactly what happened with his "lower leg injury".

Right...I mean why in gods name would we see any wisdom in not betting the farm it doesn't happen again

Again.  None of the rest of your argument is valid.  The key here is should we have gotten a redundant player or spent that $5 mil on an actual upgrade at a position of need.  Basically you're telling me Smith was an insurance policy.  Not a very good use of a good portion of your cap room when we have glaring holes all over the field.

I mean who do you think we were bringing in at 5 mil that was so much better? We had no one last year that scared teams deep once Byrd and Samuels were gone. I was a Ginn fan would much rather have him than Smith but unfortunately the Panthers didn't ask my opinion on it. Just saying acting like it's the worst decision in the world is overdramatic. The contracts not even guaranteed meaning we can cut him in training camp if he looks like ass and grab a player during cuts.  Is funny you think you get to decide if someone else's opinion is valid or not just cause they disagree with you. How were the signs there that his ankle would be obliterated during a tackle in which all an opposing players weight fell on his lower leg and ankle?

Two significant ankle injuries are definitely concerning. If you want to just pretend they're not, fine.

Wrong. We could use Smith because we sorely lack a true deep threat. That's what Smith is.

Austin is just another utility player in the same mold as Samuel and I'd rather give our former 2nd round pick the opportunity to get those snaps. Yeah, I'm concerned about his durability, but not so much that I want to rush out and spend money on a redundant player.

At 5 million, probably no one.  Hypothetically though, you could have had a younger, up and coming Albert Wilson for only 3 million more.  Some of the other second tier guys may end up signing for something similar.

Smith is a stopgap.  Wilson and potentially Moncrief would not be.

And TD had 3 ACL tears, so?  poo happens.  It's a violent sport.  If he was IR,d for hang nails or or out for minor poo sure.   Hell, if he missed a lot while in college then maybe, just maybe you would have a point.  In this case I just think you are dismissing the guy for misguided reasons.

....but you were OK with trading for Smith, who will take reps away from a younger guy in Byrd, who's in the same mold as Torrey Smith and TS in fact, redundant.

Oh yeah I agree...I wouldn't mind getting either of those guys. I'm certainly not president of the Torrey smith fan club just know we need someone who can go deep and catch a go route over their shoulder from Cam so at least see some sense in the move

There's always outliers. The list of guys to successfully return from three ACL injuries at the time TD did it was nonexistent. I'm not dismissing Samuel at all but I'm also not pretending that there is zero cause for concern. Foot/ankle issues tend to be recurring. See: Stewart, Jonathan.
