MLB deserved it though.  Football is so much different with a hard cap and (somewhat) manageable contracts.  Baseball is stupid and was LONG overdue for a correction.  Still laughing at what some of those idiots rejected as qualifying offers.... hope those idiots fired their agents. lol

It's fascinating to see what happened to baseball this offseason. 1/3 of teams in rebulding mode and not trying to win.

They think they can all sign Harper next year OR they have accepted that the Astros are gonna clean their clock again this season

I'm a Braves fan and we've been 1/3 of those teams for like 5 years now.  One of the worst run franchises in pro sports.

For everyone screaming that the Smith deal was stupid, how so? We traded a CB who we were ready to move on from anyway for a WR. Not just a WR, but a deep threat WR which we sorely missed last season. His contract looks reasonable based on the crazy numbers that are getting ready to be thrown around in free agency.

I'm not super excited about Smith, but on paper he does fill a need and Worley was straight up hot trash at CB. If nothing else, I'm glad to see that we're officially moving on from Worley.

Their time is coming, they have some great guys in their farm system.

Oh, and please forgive talking about the Braves in a Panther forum:)

Because Gettleman didn't do it...  otherwise, it would be GENIUS!

Mainly because he's bad, takes up much needed cap room as a redundant player (we have two speedsters who can do what he does on the roster already) and pretty much puts us out of the running for a real #1 receiver that we need to be a good football team.  He also takes much needed reps away from our young guys.

Baseball is the best case study for why the NFL should ALWAYS stay steadfast with a hard salary cap. Hell, the NBA's "luxury tax" system may even be worse than having a hard cap but at least they have some protection built in with the max contract stipulation. I get it that hard cap is frustrating for fans when you have to let a guy like Norwell walk, but it's the only way for a relatively small market team to be able to compete year in and year out. Other than that, you're stuck with hoping to get lucky with developing young, cheap talent and having a surprisingly good season every now and then. One of the great things about the NFL is the constant parity and that's in large part due to that hard salary cap. Take that away and people like Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder would be trying to buy Super Bowl appearances every year.

Fast 40 time doesn't equal deep threat. Samuel is really raw as a WR and is much better at this point working underneath and using his speed/quickness for YAC and Byrd is a borderline NFL caliber WR.

Smith has shown in the past that he's a legit NFL deep threat and the past two seasons he's been in offensive systems that didn't really utilize his greatest strength. We have to hope that getting back into a system more suited to his strengths will help him regain his form. Worried about his cap hit? Release Shepard. There's nearly half of his cap hit recovered right there.

Lol what “speedster” on our roster has ever done anything? That is a pretty bold assumption. I’m not even sure who you’re referring to.

Also that huge “cap hit” is simple math. $2.7mil more than Shepard once we cut him.  I’d say it’s worth it.
