It's that time of the year for me.

We already have a 4-3 de that we drafted that was a guy that needed to gain weight and develop.

A little bit different situations and we could use all the help we can possibly get at DE. And I don’t think he needs to gain much weight, maybe an offseason or two in an NFL strength program will help but he’s essentially the same size as Hardy was here.

Agree. DE in the 1st is the last thing i want us to do. It’s a project or mediocre DE that next year wouldn’t sniff the 1st. We’ve got Peppers, Addison, Horton, Hall and Cox and a 4 DT rotation that’s top notch. We were 3rd in sacks last year and I think 2nd in 2016. I know we need to replace Peppers in 2019, but that’s a good 4-3 DE class.

On the other hand we have Captain, Bradberry and Adams for 5 DB positions that could be considered starters. We’ve got Corn who is more of a replace Captain guy and no one else. Going DE is stupid for our team and terrible value this year in the 1st round especially. If people complain about Butler who’ll get 40% of the snaps this year, I can’t wait to see the complaints about a 1st round pick that never sees the field.

Agreed. This draft is needs based. At DE, we have Peppers, Addison, an improved Horton, and developing, second-year players Hall and Cox Jr--we are OK.

At S, we have 37-year old Adams,  Demetruis Cox (unproven and not elite), and Jones (special teams)

At LG, we have utility players.

At CB, we have Bradberry and Seymour (Munnerlyn and unproven Corn Elder are nickels)

No between the tackles RB

No real depth at TE, and Olsen is 3

We need to draft a WR

Not seeing the DE need right now.  I think we will trade a lot in this draft. I would not be surprised to see the third rounders packaged to move up for 2 second rounders.

A non-top 10 DE won't contribute in year 1. DE is arguably our biggest need going forward and with Pep back this year we have the luxury of being able to groom one and redshirt one this year. If we wait until next year we may not have that ability if Pep retires. My problem with DE this year is I really just don't like the class that much. Rasheem Green is my favorite realistic target and I want him badly, whether in the first or second. But outside of him there's Davenport who probably won't be there at 24 and Key who may be the next Randy Gregory. Obviously Chubb is a stud but way out of reach. Don't really like the other prospects in the first 2 days. There are some later round guys who are intriguing but as any later round guy you can't count on them to be a solution. Green would be a huge addition even if we have to take him at 24. And he would see the field in the rotation. Pep is a situational player and Mario may play roughly 60-70% of the snaps? Lot of DE snaps to go around and we can upgrade on Horton and Cox.

If it's DE, that feels like RR not valuing CBs/Secondary and thinking his system can hold up with a good pass rush.  As usual, though...we've seen this before. QBs like Brees who get the ball out quick will pick this secondary apart, again.  I guess that would mean the target is a guy like Davenport, Hubbard, Duke Ejifor (Would be such a Hurney move)?

Only thing that makes this "make sense" to me is FA can still fill secondary holes, and we aren't done yet.

Yea those doods are crazy. People keep thinkin we're going S in round 1....ain't happening....not sure how many times this needs t be said but it's not something Rivera will do. When's the last time we've done it with even better S classes?

With a DE your secondary play becomes obsolete in theory and that's how guys like Rivera think. With a pass rush it won't matter if the CB can't cover for more than 3 seconds because your passrush gets there in 2 or 3 seconds. We will draft a DE before a S in round 1 and you can put that in with death and taxes.

There's no immediate need for DE, but in terms of the future, it might be our #1 need based on our defensive philosophy. Peppers is pushing 40 and is only playing one more season. Addison is on the wrong side of 30 himself. Horton is a solid rotational DE but nothing more. Everyone else on the roster is completely unproven and only Hall was considered a legitimate NFL caliber prospect coming out of college. We build our defense around the front seven and lean on a strong pass rush. If we're going to continue that philosophy we absolutely need to add young talent and do it soon. I sure hope we don't force things and reach on a DE, but DE should be on the table for us everywhere in the draft if the right guy is there, including at #24.
