Well, yeah there's always the possibility someone takes a guy from the PS. I just don't think they envisioned it happening with Butker. Hurney didn't draft him and apparently wasn't ready to cut a veteran kicker for the rookie. Like I said, in hindsight it's easy to rip Hurney for it but it still isn't that bad of a goof.

That's kind of the problem.

Well, the only reason another team did snatch him was because of an injury to their guy. It's not like teams were clamoring to get him.

Apologists.

Keeping Gano last season will likely cost us over 20 MILLION DOLLARS over the same amount of time that keeping Butker would have cost us 2.4 MILLION DOLLARS against the salary cap.

20M vs. 2.4M

Let that sink in and contemplate what we could have done with that money.

Do you really think the Chiefs thought they were getting a pro-bowl kicker when they signed Butker? The Panthers aren't the only team the underestimated his talent/value. The Chiefs got lucky he turned out to be as good as he was. If it was so obvious that he would have the season he did he would've been picked higher than he was and he would've been snagged off the practice squad faster than he was.

Keep polishing that turd.

I think that the Panthers liked him and his price tag enough to use a draft pick on him.

I think that the Panthers liked him enough to carry him over to the opening day roster.

I think that Marty Hurney is one of the biggest salary cap idiots to ever have the letters GM typed beside his name.

I think that the right call then was to cut Gano, and have the younger, cheaper, seemingly equally talented kicker take the reigns.

This is all about long term salary cap management.  Something that Hurney showed he couldn't do during his first stint here, and this move further proves that.

Again.  20M vs. 2.4M

What could we have done with that money?

It's just funny that you guys think it was sooooo obvious Butker was going to be a pro-bowler. He was picked up after an injury to a starter. No one else was cutting a veteran to sign him. Just like we weren't.

Yeah, I have a hard time blaming Hurney for the decision. By all accounts Butker wasn't having a good camp and Gano looked like hands down the better kicker. Could you have imagined the howling had we kept Butker, he continued to struggle, and Gano had the season he had last year elsewhere. Oh good lord...

Lord almighty.

This isn't about Pro Bowls.  This isn't about what we thought we had in Butker.  This is, and will be about value, and how you have to be careful with the salary cap when you have a franchise QB under contract.

I absolutely won't argue Hurney has a bad track-record with the cap. And I certainly wasn't in favor of bringing him back as GM. But I see this move as more of an unfortunate situation rather than a massive mistake by him.
