Rapoport: Panthers working out long-term deal with K Graham Gano. Franchise Tag if not done by 4pm tomorrow

Gano had a damn good year, not gonna lie. Every kicker is gonna miss a few. Just like every QB is going to miss some throws, every receiver is going to drop some passes, every lineman is going to miss a block, ever LB is going to miss a tackle, etc. No one is perfect.

If we could go back and do it over, yeah we keep Butker but hindsight is always 20/20. No sense in crying over it at this point. I would prefer tagging Gano and paying him $5M this year vs. tying ourselves to a long-term contract to a kicker who has been historically unreliable. That's all.

Imagine the fun if we got Gano on the one year Franchise tender, drafted a kicker in the late rounds and kept both on roster for opening day?

Everyone should be pissed at Hurney.

I'm not happy about the decision he made on that one. I'm not happy with his final three drafts before he got fired. I'm not happy about him trading KB mid-season leaving us with a bunch of practice squaders at WR to try to make a playoff run.

I'm not happy about how DG handled the Norman situation either. Not particularly happy with how he stockpiled 1st round picks at positions of strength where they would be playing behind better, more experienced players during their cheap rookie contracts. Certainly not happy about his decision to give Russell Shepard the contract he should've given Ted Ginn.

No one is perfect, that's why I think the whole "team Gettleman" or "team Hurney" thing is so dumb.

Who mentioned DG in this thread?

Exactly. I’m only worried about the GM we have now. And how we should give him a chance because he did so well since his return. We will regret every penny we give Graham Gano, if/when this happens.

It's easy to hate on Hurney for his Butker decision in hindsight but at the time it wasn't unreasonable to stash him on the practice squad. They obviously weren't expecting anyone to steal him away and the plan was to have him take over this season. Chiefs kicker went down with an injury and they searched around for a replacement and struck gold. If their kicker was never injured there's a good chance Butker stayed on the PS.

Also, Gano had a great season. Signing him to an extension isn't something worth getting mad about.

Anytime you put someone on the practice squad, you have to be prepared for the possibility that someone might sign them. It happens all the time.

Practice squad is not a safe place to stash someone

Again, bad choice then, bad choice now, and many here will wonder "why we can't afford more weapons for Cam".

It's not just this one, but a few of these stupid moves that mess you up longterm.  2 or 3M here, 1.5 or 2M there, and you can't go after a Watkins or a Robinson.

God what a dumb move.

Well, yeah there's always the possibility someone takes a guy from the PS. I just don't think they envisioned it happening with Butker. Hurney didn't draft him and apparently wasn't ready to cut a veteran kicker for the rookie. Like I said, in hindsight it's easy to rip Hurney for it but it still isn't that bad of a goof.
