REPORT: Panthers heavily interested in the free agent QB market

In the past, the Panthers always wanted a veteran backup who also served as something of a second quarterback coach for Cam Newton.

With the talk that they were looking at using a mid-round pick on a quarterback this year - talk that's ongoing by the way - I thought perhaps they were getting away from the idea that such was needed.

When Rivera was talking about keeping Derek Anderson for another year, I thought maybe he'd be just a placeholder until their draftee took over the backup duties next year.

If we wind up signing a veteran free agent and using a mid-round pick on a quarterback, I'm not sure what to think.

Rosen also had a brutal offensive line, saw a ton of blitzes and pressure, and had a poor receiving corps that dropped something like 30 + passes on the season. His best target Caleb Wilson was a TE who got hurt and was done for the year early on in the season and Lasley his best receiver was suspended something like 4 total games.

Rosen will be the best QB in this class if he can remain healthy which is a legitimate question after how beat up he was in college largely due in part because of his protection up front and lack of mobility in the pocket. He will need to improve there quickly and I hope he goes to a team that can protect him because his arm, ball placement, and football IQ are special.

Which makes my pt about just looking at completion %...

Are you kidding me Hurney . This dude wants to kill this team we don't need a dang qb draft a pissy back up in the 6th why kill cap space Hurney you scum

Its very possible he could tag gano to cost 5 mil vs the cap and then another 4 or 5 mil to a backup QB.

We only have like 24 Mil in cap space after taking away $ for draft picks . Take away 10 mil on a backup QB  and a kicker, then we are strapped  at 14 mil and like reduced to bargain binning like usual in free agency other than the qb signed.

From the team page: Where things stand - Quarterbacks

Quote

Behind Newton? Even if it is Anderson again, it realistically won't be Anderson much longer. The Panthers valued Garrett Gilbert enough to protect him with promotion to the 53-man roster in October, but they should also keep a close eye on how the draft shakes out especially on the third day. They aren't going to sign Kirk Cousins in free agency or draft Baker Mayfield in the first round, but players like Senior Bowl standouts Kyle Lauletta (Richmond) and Mike White (Western Kentucky), or Charlotte area native Riley Ferguson (Memphis) could be considerations.

That and another quote about Anderson from this article make me wonder if we've made him an offer that he's not taking.

It seems as though there are conflicting reports.

On one end the Panthers are interested in the QB free agent market and on the other end the Panthers are interested in addressing the backup position via the draft.

Additionally, on one hand there are reports that the Panthers may move on from Anderson and on the other hand there are reports that Rivera wants Anderson back.

Recent history suggest that Rivera tends to favor an older backup to Cam (i.e. Anderson) and as mentioned Rivera may be interested in having Anderson back.

If Rivera stays true to his preferences, we will be looking at individuals like Derek Anderson (35), Drew Stanton (34), Matt Moore (34), Josh McCown (39), and Ryan Fitzpatrick (35). Sure the Panthers could elect to go after someone like Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford, Case Keenum, Geno Smith, or Blaine Gabbert, but it would definitely go against Rivera's philosophy.

In addressing the QB position through the draft, I'd keep an eye out for Kurt Benkert (whom the Panthers met with), he had a solid year at UVA with no real game changers at the RB, TE, or WR position. I also wouldn't be shocked if the Panthers gave Quinton Flowers a look as a UDFA, he could be that swiss army knife (a.k.a. Joe Webb) type of player that Rivera is intrigued by.

I get Bradford isn't a top starter, likely hit miss mid of the road guy as a starter that cannot stay healthy. Worst case back 1/4 of the starters with health issues. But why is that bad as a backup???? If he comes cheaper than Bridgewater why not? Bradford is worlds better than DA ATM.

really next #2 is a bridge to the bridge that is the guy after Newton. But whoever it is needs to keep the ship floating if cam goes down for a game or 3. I'm down for 3 years of Bradford as a backup who likely never sees games. But if he does come I  during to injury, it's not a lost cause with him in there for 3 games. That was what we use to have in DA.
