The case for James Washington

Question: Will the Panthers target some receivers that can just get open?

Cam Newton is a unique quarterback. He is an inaccurate passer in the broader sense of the word, and has ranked 32nd or worse in each of the past two seasons in PFF’s adjusted completion percentage. He led the league in 2017 in overthrown passes, with 45 going high of his receivers and in the past, the Panthers have tried to combat that first by surrounding him with giant receiving options and then by shortening the passes they ask him to make. He is among the most inaccurate passers on those shorter plays though, and the next option might be to just look for the best receivers they can find at getting open.

The solution: Oklahoma State’s James Washington has the ability to torch defensive backs and make plays all over the field. He led the nation with 815 yards on deep passes in 2017, and ranked second in deep touchdowns with eight. He also ranked fourth in the nation in yardage on contested catch situations, scoring three times on those plays. Washington dominated at the Senior Bowl when he faced elite competition all week, and he could be the No. 1 receiver the Panthers have been missing for years.

I don't care what he's built like if he tracks the ball and makes contested catches. He appears to do both of those things. Those highlights basically consisted of a QB with a lollipop arm throwing up prayers to him in tight coverage and him coming away with the ball regardless.

It always baffels me how professional receivers have zero ball skills. Ginn was really bad about this. If the ball isn't exactly where it was supposed to be, they can't adjust their body to make the catch.

Its possible, just watch games or other teams not named the Panthers. We've just had terrible luck with WRs historically as a franchise , for the most part.

Sounds like a scouting problem to me.  If that's the case it's probably not going to change anytime soon.

He can get deep but does not have a vertical...looking forward to seeing his number there.  Just not sure he is worth 24...I keep thinking if we get calls I would not pick day 1.  Move back.

I am too

From a article from last year

"A 6-foot, 205-pound missile with a 39-inch vertical"

https://www.google.com/amp/s/247sports.com/Article/Oklahoma-State-WR-James-Washington-wont-slow-down-for-anyone-109804358/Amp

"When he plays, he is a violent ballerina. His body control is extraordinary, and he couples it with a 39-inch vertical jump and a 40-yard dash around 4.4 seconds. Although he is only 6'0", he gives off the impression that he is so much larger."

https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2741076-all-talent-no-nonsense-ok-sts-james-washington-breaks-the-star-wr-diva-mold.amp.html

also one of the best if not the best 50/50 contested catchers in the country

id say he's got a pretty good Vert

it seems a lot of the excuses for Washington are just that, excuses for why not to draft him.

one writer says he's weak at something while scouts and stats say he is the strongest in the coutry at that. Then that scout says hes weak at something different, then the stats and a totally different scout says no......no hes the strongest WR in that.

Some people say he is a body catcher, then a lot of scouts say his strength is he has strongs hands and a strong catcher

they say he is just a product of lobbing it to him open deep all the time, but the stats show he is the top WR at making contested catches.

the list of excuses go on

Who is projecting he runs a 4.4? I would’ve guessed 4.5 based on the film. He’s not slow but not very fast either. Good route runner I would love him in the 2nd. Better receiver than CS for sure. Still not sure why we took two rb/wrs back to back

Dude just ran a 4.54 lol. Again, not sure where 4.4 was coming from but was obvious he wasn’t that fast on tape. Still like him in the 2nd or 3rd though
