The case for James Washington

A few weeks ago it looked like we may have a shot to grab him in the 2nd somehow.  But his stock is climbing into the first round range.

What do we need?

1. A deep threat with deep speed. Check

2. Someone who competes for the ball.  Check

3. Someone who still has size and strength.  Check

His measurements were impressive yesterday

5'11 213- thats a tank for a WR. Im curious to see his bench today.  In 2016 he was #4 WR in the nation vs Press coverage

5'11 seems shorts, but his length makes up for it.  His arm length  is 32 3/8 (Lattimore for the saints is among one of the longest CBs at 31 1/4") which is exactly the same as Courtland Sutton who everyone says is the "big target WR".  Hand size? At 9 6/8 inches, thats the same as Sutton and St Brown.  Also bigger than Atemans (9"), and Auden Tate the big  6'5 FSU kid that they say is the next KB (9 3/8)

*side note* Christian Kirk (9 7/8") and Anthony Miller (10") beat all those big WRs out.

Washington has been known as the top deep man in the country making ball tracking look easy.  He's been the top WR in balls caught that have traveled at least 20+ yards.  He is expected to be a 4.4 guy and a human pogo stick reporting a 39" vert,  so again this combine is going to be Big for him

He is a outside WR which is what we need.  Not a slot.  In 2016, he only had 7 receptions from the slot.

Last year Chidobee Awuzie was the hot climber looking to be a first round CB.  Washington matched up against him in the bowl game and lit him up for 9 receptions for 171 yards

We need to just add a WR in free agency and spend the draft focusing on DL, OL and DB.

A FA WR who is worth a damn aint cheap.  And there will be decent players at other positions who fall.

Guys like Ragnow, the DE from Wake, Kyzir White.  Those guys will be around rounds 2-3.

WR is out top position of need, and to land a solid one who can create seperation and catch is worth the pick.

Only guy who some say Could fall to our spot that id take over a WR like Washington is Josh Jackson because he is a Norman clone

Something about him bugs me. He also got quite used to body catching in college on wide open routes which is a similar symptom RBs face when they’re used to a cushy OL and sweeps.

I don’t dispute his talent and ability to transition but he just seems like a RB trying to play WR. I’d actually hope to steer clear of this guy.  If we draft him, yay, but I’m not vibing with Washington.

If you look at his film. He's very much a hands catcher

Been hearing a lot about this guy will he be there late in the second or would the Panthers have to trade up and get him

His stock is all over.  Coming into the season he was a top 15 guy.  He was just as good but a few scouts downgraded him to late 2nd saying he isnt the burner he appears and all build up speed not quick.

Others say he is hands down a first round guy

Not much of a film guy but from I can remember and in his highlights, every play of his is the same mid to deep slant route.

He’s also just downright stiff and his speed isn’t anything special. What’s the special thing about this guy? I’m really not seeing anything to get excited over to be frank.

I heard he has suspect hands.  Do not want if true.

I see the same things you do..  It seem like he is more built like a rb..

he looks pretty decent at adjusting for the ball in the air; I saw some speeding up and slowing down to make catches, a little change of direction when needed.

It always baffels me how professional receivers have zero ball skills. Ginn was really bad about this. If the ball isn't exactly where it was supposed to be, they can't adjust their body to make the catch.

Totally.  Ditto with a few in here as well.  Washington just seems meh and is very much like a RB and the OK State system is a high volume offense where he wasn't asked to do much as a receiver (route wise, schemes, etc.).  I imagine a lot of teams will be meeting him/vetting to see how he can transition given college could only show so much given those constraints.

The only WR that passes the eye test for me this year is Anthony Miller.  He's got that aggressive style where he tracks down the ball and fights defenders.  On top of it, he has an extensive route tree ready to go and is super game-quick.

Still very much in the dark on this class so may go sleeper hunting.
