QB contracts are ruining the quality of teams. No surprise that the Super Bowl winner was a team with a QB on a rookie contract and a guy signed as a backup. No surprise that the runner-up was a team that pays its QB under market value and then compensates him off the books.

You need a good QB who's also cheap, and then you use the money you're saving to build a real roster.

In 2018 we need to dump the incumbent and his fat contract and bring in a rookie of our choice.

As QB contracts continue to spiral out of control, I am increasingly of the opinion that something needs to change.  Yes, it's the most important position on the field, but it does feel sometimes like having a really good QB sells tickets, but may not necessarily win you a Super Bowl.

I wouldn't pay that for Ryan but he is the face of a franchise that is successful(ish) as a team and at the QB position.  Teams without an above average QB are constantly in the pit of misery so teams with above average QBs hang on to them jealously out of fear.  Then the agents smell the blood and pounce.  Its insane to me that Brady would be paid anywhere near "market value" when market value is Garropolo, Ryan, Cousins, Stafford.  He should but won't command 25+% more.  Its an awful system but its the one we have.  

 

Whoever said it is correct.  SF screwed this whole system.  Teams that will pay an average guy or takes  risk on possibly above average guy and pay him as a #1 screw everyone up.

With pass interference so heavily enforced DBs and safetys  are neutered putting the focus on passing and catching.  It makes the game more "exciting" to the NFLs perspective and puts teams in a position to have to have Qbs that can dink and dunk and set up the long ball rather than good old fashioned smash mouth football.  Now teams are tripping over themselves to get the next Breed or Brady or Manning and are blindly writing checks.

All sports contracts are getting out of hand, not just the QB. Talk of Bryce Harper's and Mike Trout's next MLB contracts are half a billion for each man. Simply insane.
