Hurney flew back from the Combine to tell J-Stew in person he was released.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney simply wasn’t dancing around the question on Tuesday when he said that key personnel decisions, including one on the future of running back Jonathan Stewart, were a fluid situation.

Hurney simply didn’t want Stewart, the team’s all-time leading rusher, to hear or read he was being released before the two had a chance to talk.

Hurney also didn’t want to tell Stewart, who returned to Charlotte by plane on Wednesday morning, the news over the phone.

He was so dedicated to personally delivering the tough news to the 30-year-old back that Hurney flew back to Charlotte from the NFL combine in Indianapolis so he could meet Stewart on Wednesday before flying back to the combine to continue that process.

I don't care for Hurney, but that is pretty classy.

All this tells me is his time management and schedule skills are inept, just like his General Manager skills.

The hardcore Hurney hater in me says "What a waste of time and resources. It's combine week and instead of doing his due-diligence on these prospects that have potential in the mid rounds, he's flying around the country trying to make sure feelings don't get hurt"

But honestly, it's not a big deal. It's a classy move. Stewart deserves it.

Williams didn't though. He a bish.

This is one reason Gettleman was fired and Marty rehired. How management treats players does make a big difference and is important to the locker room. These guys are professional and deserve to be treated as such. The idea that at long as you win who cares how you treat people is an ignorant attitude which just reflects the decline in civility and respect for others so rampant these days. The ends don't justify the means. In fact I have been taught my whole life the exact opposite.

No. He could have done that while he was in Charlotte. All it says is going for a RB in the first round. This is an exlempary example, why Hurney should not be GM.

Even if he isn’t it, says he’s trying to play a game. Not win a league.

Two kickers. Two kickers. How did that work out?

If you believe for a second gettleman didn’t treat everyone with respect. You are incompetent. It is a business and he treated it as such. Much like our dear coach up in New England.

This poo right here,

Let me breaks down the facts for you.

Gettleman: fired because JR got a racist wedgy. Took a sabatical for a season. Immediately got rehired by another team.

Hurney: had two good season in 11 years. Got fired, couldn’t even get a job in football. Became a glorified radio host. Got rehired, behind a scandal and a falsification of the Rooney rule. And will proceed to destroy this team.

This isn’t rocket science.

There's nothing wrong with Marty being nice to players and showing respect to guys he thinks highly of and personally drafted.. The problem with Hurney has been refusing to let those guys go. I'd rather see him do this than offer Stewart another extension.

Love Stewart, but he just doesn't have the juice to back up his name anymore for a whole season.

Also, don't really care about Hurney not being at the combine to stand around and exchange business cards right now. The truth is, aside from interviews-- which we'll do multiples of with guys we're interested in anyway-- player tape and combine results are easily available digitally at any time. Being there in person for a lot of that doesn't really matter and work on scouting prospects can mostly be done at any time of the day or night.

If you don't know that he didn't treat everyone with respect there is no discussion to be had. And I am only interested in Hurney 2.0. the rest is ancient history and by most accounts he is doing things differently and better. No need to rehash his past just like discussing Belicheck and Cleveland.

Hurney's actually doing his job for once. He knows he's on the hot seat, and it's pleasantly surprising to see him put forth the effort now that he has his second chance.

Hope this remains a permanent thing and now a temporary change like Ron.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
