NFL could change DPI from spot foul to 15-yard penalty

It's worth remembering that a fair number of pass interference calls on long plays, especially near the end of the game, are deliberate.  When a DB knows he's about to give up a big play if he plays it straight, he has a choice between that and taking the penalty.  Nearly all of these guys will take the penalty nearly all of the time.

Make that penalty only 15 yards and you may as well call open season on receivers in the last two minutes.  If they'll take a 50 yard penalty over giving up a big play, then they sure as hell will take a 15 yarder.

Like I said, I'm sure defensive coaches love this idea.  Offensive guys, not so much.

I’m a huge fan of college football and I can tell the fear-mongers with assurance that it doesn’t work the way y’alls panicky scenarios say.

Yes, there are the ocassional situations where the DB finds himself in a “WHOOPS!” situation and he just plain tackles a receiver to prevent a play. But that really doesn’t happen often at all. Hell, I can’t even dredge up a memory of one of those kinds of plays impacting a game. My unprofessional WAG would put the # of those linds of plays for my team, on both offense and defense, at maybe 2.

And here’s the thing... yeah it sucks if you’re the one on offense, but its not like you are totally screwed, you still are awarded 15 yards and an automatic 1st down.

The kind of play in a football game where this happens in general is pretty rare. The most common situation on a pass play is either the DB is cleanly beaten and he ain’t going to make a play legal or illegal anyway or the DB is close enough to the receiver to make an attempt at a legal play.

”WELL GORSH IF’N WE PASS DEEZ HERE RULES RECEEBERS ARE A-GONNA JUST GET TACKLED ALLA TIME!”

Nope, it don’t work that way, shrinking violets.  Defenses would ALWAYS prefer stopping an offense over giving them free yards and free 1st downs.

”Well, a team might intentionally take that penalty in a rare case in need! And taking an intentional penalty is wrong!”

Oh, so we’re gonna crack down on all intentional penalties are we? Well, there goes the careers of many a coffin-corner punter.

Oh, and we ALL know what the most common downfield pass interference penalty is, don’t we? Yep, its the play where both receiver and DB are hand fighting with each other equally and the flag comes flying out.  On who? Well, the DB, of course. Here’s 50 free yards for you, offense! Enjoy!

Those kinds of plays are WAY bigger travesties than merely being awarded 15 yds and a 1st down. And they happen much more frequently than the whoops-I-better-tackle-the-receiver-cuz-I’m-beat too.

Weird how it doesn’t happen that way in college ball.

Guess they must be dumb to not use this brilliant strategy.

I consider this good news.

I have to disagree man. This rule change would be a huge step in making the game all around fairly called.

Its absolute BS that a defense can bust their ass all game. Have a crucial 3 and out. Only to have it ruined by a 50 yard PI spot foul. It’s not fair at all.

15 yard penalty, new set of downs and no clock run off is perfect.

The NFL won’t do it because it keeps the game from being controversial and risky. Which gives them ratings and us headaches and more threads about ref screw jobs.

If the call is right 100% of the time, I like the way the rule is now. A compromise I would approve of is half the distance to the goal on spot fouls over 15 yards.

Technically PI in that 5-14 yard range would be more rewarding to the offense than they currently are. I like the 5 yard hold penalties. It feels like the real punishment is giving the offense a 1st down.

This wasn't something I have been clamoring for. But it makes you wonder if its an attempt to balance things with a possible rework of the catch rules. If they offense benefits from a new catch rule, maybe they give this to defenders on PI.

I think it will give the defense an edge on late comebacks.  If you need a long pass. 20 plus yards law of averages says that if you get mauled and get another crack at it you are likely to fail.  It works otherwise.

The clock stops on a defensive penalty. It will certainly change things. But it will still extend drives. Allowing a completion will be better than giving up a penalty in many end of game situations. It will change things but those long ball penalties are a small percentage of plays throughout an entire game. This rule can affect any passing play.
