Sometimes (okay, pretty much always) I have a hard time putting things like that on the kids. A lot of these guys listen to the wrong people in making that decision. They should be listening to the NFL advisory committee and their coaches with NFL connections, not friends trying to ride their coattails telling them they're the next star, agents trying to get in their pockets, and media talking heads like Mel Kiper and Todd McShay. Seems like every year there's guys who the media "experts" have ranked as 3rd rounders who end up going undrafted.

Stuff like this:

http://www.roanoke.com/hokies/sports/football/espn-s-mel-kiper-jr-bullish-on-hokies-underclassmen-projects/article_044a030c-fc99-11e7-932f-2fbf9f77f0e9.html

This early in the draft process, projections are difficult, however. At this point last year, Kiper said Bucky Hodges could be the second tight end off the board and called receiver Isaiah Ford "a solid second-rounder." They ended up going in the sixth and seventh rounds of last year's draft, respectively.

As fans for the most part we understand that these mock drafts and media "experts" are pretty much just for entertainment purposes only, but you gotta put yourself in the mind of a 20 year old kid trying to make a decision on his future. He wants to play in the NFL. He wants to make millions of dollars. And he wants it NOW. These media talking heads spewing out of their asses can really mislead these kids and contribute to some really poor decisions that has a real negative impact on their future.

I never knew of any character concerns with bucky

I bet bucky was right in my WTF boat with me along with Iseah Ford after the draft. If they did infact get drafted mid to high, good for them. But it hurt the hokies and it certainly hurt them. Hokies could have been a few notches higher with these veterans still on the team last year.

Can't blame kids for choosing an opportunity to get paid good money to play vs. playing for a scholarship and big man on campus perks.

The kids chose poorly, but I definitely have some sympathy for the factors that went into making that decision.

I agree, but honestly wouldn't change anything on this front. They're still not going to be making anywhere near NFL "take care of their family" money even if they do make some sort of stipend.

These kids do in fact need to be smarter though. Like you said, listen to nfl scouts and legit NFL people.

Listening to these media personalities whos main goal is to general buzz and views is not smart. Dont go off of emotion and hype.

Only player im truly pissed at is Jarrod Evans. He is in fact areogant and full of himself. Im happy this poo happened to him.

That was always the impression I got from VT fans. The guys oozed with talent, but pretty much expected to coast on talent alone and pretty much just thought that he was the poo.

yep I was in Blacksburg during the majority of the Bucky Hodges years- have a source that was very close to the team that confirmed this
