of course there is  a huge need, has been for years.  It's just safety is not a position I like spends a 1st on.

Not saying I wouldn't, but it would have to be a sure thing.  Spending a 1st AND a 3rd sounds like a lot for a safety.  But he's ranked high by nearly every source I've seen.  You spend that much capitol on a safety, he better be Pro Bowl every season.

I just think a safety who can cover and who has true sideline to sideline range would make a HUGE difference in our secondary. I'm not saying James is Earl Thomas, but Earl Thomas is what made the "legion of boom" work. They had a bunch of really physical, but not exactly speedy guys at CB and SS but having Thomas covering that back third freed up those guys to do what they do best - get up on the line and press receivers and be physical. I know that our defense doesn't call for a lot of that, but I think a true centerfielder FS would take a lot of pressure off the rest of our secondary guys who know they can't get beat deep because there's not going to be any help back there. I really think that has a lot to do with the lack of turnovers in our secondary. Our guys can't gamble on INTs. If they gamble and lose it's probably gonna be a TD. Our safeties just don't have the range to recover and help out.

He is thee number one target I have for us as a realistic option. Dude is somewhere between Chancellor and Harrison Smith. We need a stud back there and James oozes with it, IMO.

That being said, I think he crushes the combine and goes  somewhere in the 11-15 range.

Same, but I don't really see the Chancellor comparison. Chancellor is basically a LB playing SS because he's protected by Earl Thomas over the top. They're one helluva pairing but I think Chancellor would've gotten exposed a long time ago with Thomas.

If he makes it to 19 yes. Start considering a trade up. I wouldn't move up any further for him though.  Do want.

He wont get past San Diego, I think our 2nd would be enough to entice the ravens @ 16 or possibly our comp third/3rd round choice and a 3rd/4th next year. This is one player I wouldn't be mad about trading up for, once we get past round 3 hurney will essentially be throwing darts anyways.

wow, trading up in the first for a safety.

Guy better be damn good if we do.

Hes so much more than a saftey... he can play lb and at 6’3 216 it wouldn’t take much to put him there full time if we wanted. But he can also legit cover as shown by his low completion percentage as shown. In a league dominated by tight ends that’s a rare trait to Have a 6’3 guy with range. At FSU he lined up at defensive end and generally holds his own and has ran over tackles at times rushing the passer... hell He even returned kicks a few times at FSU.

4. DERWIN JAMES, FSU – SAFETY

James has all of the tools to become a game-changing playmaker at the next level. His size and athleticism allow him to make plays in coverage against the run and as a pass-rusher. All of James’ skills led to him becoming the nation’s top-graded safety in both 2015 and 2017. He can be a coverage weapon in a two-high safety look or in man coverage against tight ends and slot receivers, while his size allows him to be a force in the run game and to get after the quarterback. – Steve Palazzolo (@PFF_Steve) yes I’m pounding the table for the top rated saftey in every year he actually played(he was injured in 16).

    • i felt good for those few games that bryce didn't look like the worst in the league. all that fell apart again sunday.  i'm borderline just bailing on it all. i've been hanging on by a thin thread for several years. i mean it's not even fun to watch any football right now.
