Panthers Converted OT Matt Kalil's $10M Option Bonus Into A Signing Bonus Guaranteeing He'll Be On Roster In 2018

Yeah. Retiring means walking out on a significant amount of money.

I'm not sure retiring at the same time as my brother would be worth that much.

If it's true that the only "benefit" that the Panthers got out of this move is that Kalil would have to repay any unearned signing bonus money, then maybe this is what Hurney feared. That Matt would up and retire with Ryan at the end of this season leaving us with a hole at LT.

But I'll tell ya, I'd much rather have a hole at LT and all that cap space back than to be tied to Matt for another season. Especially a Matt that may rather hang up the cleats but plods back to camp just to cash those fat ass checks.

Hurney already starting to put us back in the hole. Can't wait till new ownership cans his ass or he suddenly dies.

I can't get on board with wishing anybody's death over football.

Marty may not be qualified to be a GM, but that's not a reason to wish for his death. Honestly, it's more Jerry Richardson's fault than it is his.

What the fug!?!?!

The option bonus was going to become full salary this season which was going to cost the team 10m in cap space. Picking up the option bonus guarantees he's a Panther till 2019/2020 as it tacks on more bonus money and dead money. Knew this when the contract details came out.

This isn't on Hurney, it's on DG. With the Panthers cap space this coming season, he pretty much had to take the option bonus. If he didn't Panthers cap hit goes up 10m this season, which puts them over if I'm not mistaken after counting draft picks.

Good grief dude, calm down.

I think Hurney is a pretty damn awful GM, but it seems to me that part of the reason that he sucks at the job is because he seems to be a pretty decent person.

You are mistaken.

It's already been established that this move does nothing to change his cap value for the coming season.

The 10m option bonus would have been converted to salary if not picked up. Means it would have accelerated and his cap hit would've gone up the 10m respectively.

What the team did is restructure the contract from option bonus to signing bonus to avoid that 10m become salary.

From his contract details.

2018 Option Bonus: $10M (must be exercised by 3/19/2018)
If not exercised, the $10M converts to salary, and $11M 2018 becomes fully guaranteed.

The 10 million is now fully guaranteed because they converted it to a signing bonus.

Every credible source we've scene has said that this provides us no benefit.

Do you have any source outside of your own opinion that says otherwise?

Not my opinion it's from his contract details, can be found at over the cap and a few other places. The point is the option was going to be taken no matter what because if they didn't pick up his option it converted to salary.

Basically what the team did is activate his option to avoid that conversion and then altered his contract to turn that accepted option bonus into a signing bonus to help protect the team.

Actually a good move by Hurney, turns a bad situation and contract from DG into a slightly better one. If only very slightly.

Yeah sorry. Your opinion with a link from the contract doesn't mean squat.

Not my opinion, I know how contracts work. lmao. I mentioned it when we signed him to his contract.

Fact = his option bonus if not picked up, converted to salary for 2018 plus his 2018 salary became fully guaranteed.

Fact = Team Exercised his option bonus

Fact = Team converted option bonus of 10m which is 2.5m over the next 4 years into signing bonus.

Fact = This conversion only helps the team if he retires.

Fact = All of the above are not opinions nor can be opinions, they could be false assumptions but not opinions.

An opinion is me saying I think guns are great.

So if this is all true and not just your interpretation,, it should be fairly easy for you to find a source that backs it up.

You have that, or are you going to tell me you don't need it because you understand contracts?
