Since he involved his high school, I am assuming he's felt bullied/has been mentally ill since he was a kid.

That'd be a reasonable deduction.

Incognito is probably lucky he didn't just decide to blow him away instead.

Of course, that's assuming that he actually did plan to do something rather than just making a show of it. Sad to say, but that's an option too.

There's been a ridiculous amount of false threats since this latest one down in Florida for some reason. Even my small hometown in western NC was impacted by two such false threats, one at the HS I graduated from.

We've come to a point where some people are so desperate for attention they'll do practically anything to get it, even something as remarkably stupid as this.

Mental illness is a serious disease. Almost everyone knew Martin had psychological issues. I hope he gets help he desperately needs

Nice response.  It is not our place to judge.  Half of the crackheads on this forum would not have anything to say if computers and tablets were not suddenly affordable.

What kind of idiot posts conspiracy to commit murder on social media?

1. People that are mentally disturbed can't be counted on to act rationally.

2. Sometimes the sane person trapped inside the mind of the mentally disturbed person performs an outward act hoping to get noticed.  Its a scream for help.  Lets hope he gets some.

Someone had done a study a while back indicating that suicides, murders, violence etc had gone up quite a bit among teenagers since smartphones became widely available.

That didn't really make a lot of sense to me until someone pointed out that a smartphone allows you to take Facebook, Twitter, the internet and whatever else you're on with you wherever you go.

Used to be that even if you were getting viciously bullied, once you went home you were safe. Your tormentors couldn't touch you until the next day, or for a few days on the weekend. Not anymore. People who want to victimize somebody for whatever reason can now do it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without them being able to get away.

I can't honestly say that by itself would be explanation enough, but I gotta believe it's a factor..

As a child, I was bullied viciously for years. It was before cell phones and social media so at least I didn't have to deal with that. I wanted nothing more than for it to stop. And it's not just the bullying you remember. It's all the people that stood there and laughed or watched it happen and did nothing. When it comes to stuff like that, we have an elephant's memory. Add in that it can be posted to social media for you never to be able to forget, not that you really do, and that has got to make it unbearable. Technology has given us a wealth of information at our fingertips. Unfortunately, it's not all info we should have access to.

If given the choice of taking your own life to stop the pain, or taking the life/lives of those that are causing that pain to make it stop, it doesn't really surprise me that this is happening more and more often.

Mental illness is real.

I was diagnosed with clinical depression at a particularly painful period in my life.  I can rationally look back now at those horrible days and reflect "WTF was I thinking?"  But then?  I didn't see it... any of it.

Being a victim is not a mental illness. Being tortured relentlessly for years can absolutely have an effect on your psyche. Are there people that say they're a victim when they're not? Sure. But to dismiss what we're doing to each other for sadistic pleasure is beyond foolish. The people that are destroying someone for fun are the ones with a real mental illness.

Victims are victims for life, and many victims become bullies themselves and become mouth breathers who call people snowflakes to build their self esteem.  Nice post.

I've known a few that were afflicted by it.

I think I probably only know one person who's actually killed someone. She wasn't mentally ill, though. She was just evil.

Yeah, I agree with this. As great as the Internet is, it has also given people the ability to show the complete worst side of themselves with very little to no repercussion.

I am writing a book about Trauma and the impact of abuse, neglect, corporal punishment, bullying, and some other forms of adverse childhood experiences.  It causes neurological dysfunction that leads to premature death--it stays with you.  So make sure your support team stays strong--nobody gets through it alone.

This study has some interesting facts--point is,, you are not alone.  30% of the population (at least) was abused, 55% whipped by parents, and most bullied. If you had a strong support system, you get over it faster--but if not, it can be fatal because it leads to depression, self-medication with drugs and alcohol, obesity, and high suicide rates.  Scary stuff.  My book will come out in the fall.  I will share the link.
