Gano's cap hit the  past 2 years has been 4.6 and 4 million. So franchising him for 4.7 is no big deal and no more that Gettleman paid in 2016. Wouldn't be surprised to see us use that for leverage for a long term deal. We wouldn't franchise Norwell as that would pay him left tackle money and we can replace him with Moton who is waiting in the wings to grab a starting role. We will try and keep Norwell but not at any cost.

Agreed.

It's more feasible to pay Gano market value than to pay Norwell left tackle money via the franchise tag. This isn't actually a bad move if it happens.

The only thing that surprises me here is how many people seem surprised by this.

The DT franchise tag will be north of $13.5M. The OL franchise tag will be north of $14.5M. We cannot afford to tie up that much cap space in either Star or Norwell. Sorry, we just can't. Those figures are for elite disruptive three techniques and elite LTs. Star and Norwell are neither.

The franchise tag for a kicker will be in the $5M range. More than I'd want to spend on Gano, but it would keep us from being tied to him long-term.

The Huddle needs a yearly refresher on how the franchise tag is not the Favoritest Player With The Bestest Skillz Tag. It's a mechanism for locking up a guy for a year at a set rate. You primarily use it wherever you get the best dollar differential with the least talent disruption (and occasionally, of course, you use it to prevent the love of your life from walking out the door). For the most part, it's a balance of those two factors. You don't use it to overpay a guy you found on the street - and thus could possibly find on the street again - by multiple millions.*

* Complimentary refresher on what it means to overpay: Overpaying does not mean that no players of equivalent ability and utility are earning more or similar money. It simply means that those that are...are overpaid.

Yeah looks like I'm in the minority here, but I love the idea.

First things first, I wanted Butker and to cut Gano.  We didn't, Gano played very well this year.

Does that mean I want to give Gano the 4 year, 20 million dollar contract he would get on the open market?  HELLLLLL NO. Kickers and long contracts, don't do it.  You franchise Gano, maybe a 2-3 year deal if anything...or you let him walk and draft another kicker (admitting you screwed up).

That's simply untrue. Even the great Gettleman used the franchise tag multiple times.

And in the past the Patriots have used the FT on their kicker, 3 times. Pretty well run Franchise in New England I'd say.
