You think JR selling this team with stipulations?

I do kinda wonder how Richardson feels about the NFL right now.

My guess would be he figured, based on the usual way of doing business, that if he offered to sell the team the NFL wouldn't bother to investigate his workplace misconduct issues. And truth be told, if this had happened in a previous year, chances are he might have been right.

But in the post Harvey Weinstein / Ray Rice / Josh Brown / #metoo world, that just wasn't gonna happen.

So now, he's losing his team and there's a pretty good chance that more stuff is going to come out that tarnishes the most precious thing in the world to him, his legacy. And this will come at the hands of the NFL whose symbol he left at the center of the Panthers playing field in gratitude.

His problems are all his own fault of course, but in the narcissistic way Richardson likely looks at the world, he probably believes he's been betrayed by the organization he dedicated so much of his time to support. That's the kind of thing that can make someone really bitter.

Only stipulation I want is "will not move team for x amount of years"

Yet even that he couldn't really enforce.

Said it before: Wouldn't put it past him to try just about anything but his power is really limited here (whether he realizes that or not).

Guaranteed money in contracts doesn't just go away. If Hurney has a multi-year deal it's with the Panthers, not Richardson. The new owner will have to decide if he wants to buy it out to replace Hurney or any others.

Person mentioned that. He pointed out that given the deep pockets of the people looking at buying the team, that likely wasn't gonna be a problem.

Richardson was willing to stick with somebody that sucked because of guaranteed money. I'm kind of hoping our new owner doesn't have that mentality.

It wouldn't. But current contract terms would be Richardson's only possible mechanism to influence the decision buy a new owner. It may only be peanuts to them but still more than road apples.

Valid. Person quoted a figure of 20 million.

Paying 20 million to Marty Hurney...oy :eyeroll:

For most NFL owners, the *only* reason they don't cut under performing players sooner is the salary cap.  It has nothing to do with being able to afford a buyout on the contract.  In the case of a GM, it's even more cut and dry since it doesn't touch the salary cap in any way.  GM sucks, he's gone.

To be fair though, player decisions tend to be made by the GM, except in the case of a meddling owner of course.

Sure.  Just saying that money won't be an object at all to a new owner who decides he doesn't like the GM.
