What does a GM need to be?

You’re only as good as your staff, a highly decorated accounting major could manage the cap at bare minimum if you explain to them how it works. Gm needs to be able to not only build a competent team year in and out but also have a future and identity in place for a team. I think gms make there bang for there buck in 3 major categories. Drafting, free agency, and Trades

Regarding roster building, yes I agree that is the job but there are many aspects to that (scouting, FA, draft, cap) and your not going to get a guy that is an expert in all those areas. You also need a guy that can sell the team to the media and knows how to handle PR issues.

All teams have an extensive communications department for media related issues and PR. The vast majority of GM’s come from a personnel background and handle what Mr. Scot laid out. If a GM is thinking about the media on a daily basis he isn’t keeping up with the rest of the league and teams he is competing against. Along with personnel/scouting departments, NFL teams usually have people employed in Football Administration which primarily deal with salary cap and roster building. When you combine the personnel and administration departments, usually both headed by and heavily influenced by your GM as the final decision maker, you get an NFL front office along with your analytics professionals, operations staff etc.

someone who doesn’t dole out 40 million dollar contracts to running backs who can’t get conditioned enough to produce 1000 rushing yards bc they’re too busy playing raw vs smackdown and shoveling pizza rolls down their throats every night

someone who knows how to negotiate with free agents to get the best value and not bring in fourth string safeties that have the athleticism of a potato bc there’s no cap space bc you spent it all on pizza roll guy

someone who understands that paying two guys top money to split the load at one position is a retarded idea when you have ten other starting positions on that side of the ball and 5 of them can’t open running lanes for them anyway and they especially can’t do it for your bloated overpaid pizza roll pouch

someone who doesn’t re-sign a 35 year old QB to a five year deal worth 40 mil after he throws 5 interceptions against the cardinals (that’s almost as many interceptions per game as pizza rolls a certain running back can eat per minute!)

someone who doesn’t mortgage the future for a tackle who doesn’t want to get off the bench bc he has runner’s knee but you fell in love with his ability to run block so you can make your undisciplined RB look better on the field so he can shove more pizza rolls down his food hole and not feel ashamed

someone who doesn’t take it up the ass for steve smith and let him run the locker room like it’s the cafeteria at rikers (today’s menu: pizza rolls with a side of pepperoni pizza rolls...looks like somebody’s not breaking 45 rushing yards again this sunday)

I find it ironic that having a strong scouting resume is being considered critical by many on here when many of the same people were lamenting we lost Brandon Beane before DG was let go.

Most of Beane's background was logistics and travel but he was viewed as a legit GM candidate by many.

The reality is successful GM's can come from varying backgrounds. If scouting was overwhelmingly important, Don Gregory would have been a GM long ago.

Would you go to an accountant who had a degree in English?

Would you take dance lessons from a musician?

Scouting ability is a very big deal for somebody whose primary job is deciding who the most talented 53 players on a roster are. But no, it's not all there is to being a GM.

Scouts by nature only have to present information. They don't necessarily have to make decisions. They can advise on decisions, but they don't have final say.

For a GM, you have to have somebody who knows enough about talent evaluation to make the right choice, and has enough will and nerve to make it and accept the consequences.

Basically, not every scout can become a GM, but every GM should know how to scout.

A coach is a scout and better scout than a scout

a scout is someone who’s couldn’t make it as a coach

This guy scouted that Remmers should be the starting RT over Daryl Williams

This guy scouted that Shepard should be starting over Byrd

etc,etc

This guy doesn’t really know what he is talking about majority of time but wants to feel like he has superior knowledge than your lowly average huddler.

This guy is a average joe trying live off the fantasy of being a GM through the huddle.

You would suck as a GM lol
