Panthers enter free agency with holes to fill (Mike Cranston)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - DeShaun Foster, Dan Morgan, Mike Wahle and David Carr were sent packing. Jordan Gross received the franchise tag so he wouldn’t leave. Muhsin Muhammad was signed to shore up the receiving corps. Now the Carolina Panthers, determined to return to the playoffs after two dismal seasons, begin the second leg of their busy offseason Friday when free agency begins.

“We have a lot of needs,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “We have a lot of areas that we want to improve in. It’s just what comes up and is the right fit.”

Already this offseason is much different from last year when the Panthers, content with 21 of 22 starters returning, did little with their roster.

The plan didn’t work as Carolina finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs for a second straight year. While Hurney and coach John Fox were retained by owner Jerry Richardson, they face pressure to turn things around in 2008.

The reason the concept was so hotly debated was because the team did pretty much nothing in free agency that year. The argument "but we're returning 21 of 22 starters" was meant to defend that inactivity.

Didn't go so well.

Jake Delhomme- after having Tommy Johns Surgery in 2007 and ending 2008 with a 5int and 1 fumble performance in the playoffs, he was rewarded with a big 5 year extension.

When he was fired this fan base was as excited as the news of Shula being fired.

Just imagine if a new OC comes in and the offense is #1 in the NFL then we go onto fire him and bring back Shula.
