OMFG WHAT SUSPENSE. This franchise is more predictable than the WWE. Has anyone wondered if JR somehow still puts a clause that he has creative control over whoever purchases the team and maybe that's why we haven't seen a new owner yet? Because to me, he should be out, and whoever they appointed as COO should be making these decisions.

I doubt anyone pays millions for a team they can’t control.

Walter Footballs grade on hiring of Marty Hurney

Feb. 21 Updates

panthersb_logo.gif Panthers hire GM Marty Hurney: YORK Grade
I give out Millen grades to atrocious moves made by general managers. An owner who makes a dumb mistake like this one gets a "York," as bringing back Marty Hurney is akin to building a stadium two hours away from the fan base and then running a top-five head coach out of town.

The Panthers brought in Hurney to be their interim general manager following Dave Gettleman's firing. This was a poor decision, though Carolina fans knew that this would be a temporary situation. Not anymore. Carolina has made Hurney its full-time general manager once again.

Hurney absolutely destroyed the Panthers prior to his firing in October 2012. He made some great draft picks, but most of his selections in the first three rounds were all busts. In fact, from 2009 to 2011, Cam Newton was the only non-bust he picked in the first three rounds of each draft.

Hurney's worst decisions came via his contracts, which put the Panthers in cap purgatory by the time he was fired. He gave DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart a combined $81 million with $43.5 million in guarantees when they were on the team together. He also handed injury-prone Jon Beason $51.3 million with $25 million guaranteed. He basically was like a teenage girl at the mall with her rich daddy's credit card. I never thought he'd be back in the NFL as a full-time general manager, yet here we are. Unreal.

Panther fans can expect some horrible contracts in the coming years. He'll surely give overrated and injury-prone players tons of money, which will hurt Carolina in the long run. With so many great general manager candidates available, it's absolutely irresponsible of the Panthers to re-hire Hurney.

So if there's any silver lining to this, here you go:

Everyone, including Marty Hurney, knows that new ownership is coming.  Clearly, a new owner owes MH precisely nothing.  This is basically his absolute last chance to be a GM.  He screws this up, he never works in that field again.

The bottom line is that he'll be forced to do his very best.  This isn't a GM position, this is a one year interview for one.  He doesn't have a lot of room to screw up the cap, because we don't have much to work with in the first place.

This next year will either be MH's greatest as a GM, or it will be his last.

Silver lining:   In either case, Panthers fans win.

Actually, his knowing that the only way he can keep the job is by impressing  potential owners kinda scares me.

More often than not, when you have a guy who's prone to do dumb things realize that he needs to impress somebody, the result is that he does even dumber things. It's kind of like telling Gomer Pyle, "okay do your best".

I get what you mean about it being a win that that he'll be gone. I'm just hoping for him to do as little damage as possible in the meantime.

The thought that he might try to make some moves to impress someone? Duck and cover!

Anybody that lived through the entirety of the Hurney years knows this too be true.  The pro Hurney trolls were too young to remember how bad poo was.  Its about to hit them right in the mouth.  How did we take two steps forward firing Shula finally, just to take 5 steps backwards by interviewing Rooney Rule rejects and keeping hurney smfh

How many 2-14 records did we have under their tenures?

Quote me next time the Giants hire a radio host to a top level position.

If you don’t think we would have gone 2-14 or worse without Cam Newton during Gettlemans tenure you’re sadly mistaken.

The anti-Hurney trolls are too old to remember the early Hurney years. I don’t blame them. Brain function can decline as you age.
