Not sure if people who don't have connections to the organization are aware of this, but Hurney had two offers and possibly a third in play as well. He stayed behind in Charlotte to consult Jerry - he was wielding a decent amount of power behind the scenes during his "years away". Big part of why we didn't suck as hard as we could've.
