If he leaves do we sign Star? I feel like we should get one, surely we don’t let them both walk...right?

I do not think Star wants to be here and I do not think they were happy with his play, based on the lack of talks.

I think (and take that for what it is worth) that we let Star hit the market and sign him if he does not have a deal by week 2 or 3 of free agency--he would be cheaper.  However, I see a team like Green Bay or Pittsburgh grabbing him.

Y’all really think DG is gunna make Norwell the highest paid Guard and OBJ the highest paid WR in NFL history...in the same offseason?! He wouldn’t even cough up an extra million to keep Ginn over Sheppard...how did some of u already forget that quickly how DG operates?

Because they are in denial.

We let both walk. We have depth at those positions for someone to step in. We need money spent smart somewhere else.

So you’re saying he drafted someone to keep from paying someone, only to pay that someone on a new team? So paying him didn’t make sense here, but it makes sense there?

On the surface, this makes a lot of sense.  And I'm certainly not arguing your point, but there are a couple of things to take into consideration.  One, Gettleman drafted Moton before Norwell had a Pro-bowl season.  Up until then, while he had been a very serviceable OG,  Norwell wasn't elite (and may still not be) but that All Pro designation makes him more valuable.  And Moton may have been drafted as a general OL back-up in order to take over for anyone (other than center) we may lose for whatever reason.  But knowing Norwell was entering the final year of his contract, why not draft a possible replacement if he did leave especially when someone like Moton is available?

The other thing to take into consideration, as Krovvy pointed out, is that Gman DID sign Matt Kalil to such a huge deal.  If he would sign him to such a deal, what is to keep him from throwing all kinds of money at Norwell?  With the Giants' OL in the shape it is in, I don't see it as that far out there as a possibility.

I don't like making any player on my team the "highest paid" at their position.  It's just not real smart business.

That said, paying a G that never misses time?  That's not a bad idea, especially if Manning is out of the picture next season, and they are playing with a younger/cheaper QB...those dudes need clean pockets to operate, and Norwell is young.

I love Norwell, he's our most reliable player on the O line, but he's not worth the tag, nor the deal that he will command.

The Panthers themselves may be offering a subtle clue.

They've got a story on the front page of the team site about Taylor Moton and his versatility

Moton brings versatility, value to O-line

The front page teaser for the article says "Taylor Moton's versatility and ability speaks to the depth of an offensive line that could be seeking a starting guard."

It's far from an announcement, but it does indicate two things are clearly in their thinking.  One, losing Norwell is very possible and two, Moton would be ready to step in as his replacement.

If you wanna read between the lines, I think they know he's gone.

So much depends on their opinion of Moton, if you ask me--and what they are going to do at C.  Financially, it makes more sense to retain Norwell than to pay a 33-year old player with a neck issue who has missed 14 games in 2 seasons.

I sure bet Ryan will be happy to see Marty back.  He is probably working on a 3-year, $33 million extension by now.

He's gone.  We can't afford him if they want to shore up other positions.

I also can't see Dave shelling out that much cheddar on a guard but Norwell is a one of the best IMO.

Sure hope Hurney doesn't pull another CJ type contract with Norwell because he fears someone else is going to pay him big money.  Lord help us.

This article should be titled, "Life after Norwell".

RR is still mentioning Silatolu.  I have no idea why. He is a free agent.  Time to give him a watch and a party.

This quote was not pulled from thin air: "I'm not a tackle; I'm a football player. Wherever the team most needs me, that's where I am," Moton said. "This offseason, I'll take tackle sets, guard sets and I'll be snapping the ball. (WHAT???!!!) I'll feel comfortable wherever they decide to throw me in."

It was also interesting that RR mentioned Blaine Clausell, a young, 330 lb T who (to the best of my knowledge) has never played.  That suggests that RR is considering his T depth without Moton.   I think we will draft a LT prospect to groom for a year to replace.  Moton is sure starting to look a bit like Travelle Wharton II.  I wonder if one of the reasons for hiring Travelle was that he would be an ideal mentor for Moton.

Finally, the part I underlined (conspiracy theory warning).  Moton is smart.  He would get more push in the run game than Kalil did.  Whoa.  He may be a better fit at C than LG in our offense.  Could that comment, in addition to the Van Roten re-signing, signal an end to they Ryan Kalil era?

Kalil taking a true paycut, and Norwell moving on is the best financial goal...but Kalil isn't likely to do that, and Hurney isn't likely to ask.

I agree.  As much as we love Norwell, you can't win many rings dumping 12% of your salary cap in offensive G.

The trust for Marty Hurney's ability on this forum is hardly palpable.

However, if you look at this like a business move, Norwell was a tremendous value for this team for 4 seasons.  Paying a player after his best season based on that productivity becoming the norm rarely works out.

I honestly can't see gettleman spending like that

Norwell's the prototypical low maintenance, high producing hog molly that Gettleman dreams of. No doubt that this leak is to force the Panthers hand, and I also think the plan when he was here to move onto Moton, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if he splurged now that he has a little more wiggle room.

Not much better for a young QB than a good offensive line.  DG is about to start the rebuilding process up there.

It ain’t even that. It’s just Hurney gets complained about entirely too much. It’s exhausting and many here (Scot) create thread after thread to push the Hurney hate agenda. It’s old. Gettleman was never that good and Hurney was never that bad. I’d prefer to move on from both, but right now Hurney makes the most sense.

One decent off season would ease a lot of minds. Hurney wasn't horrible in some of the things he did, but dishing out ridiculous contracts that crippled the franchise cap was something that has left a horrible stink on his legacy as a GM. It honestly feels like Gettleman is setting Hurney up to do something stupid. Not saying he is, but it feels like it.
