Ppl have to just get to the realism that we can't afford Norwell.. He played his way out of Carolina pay rate.. We choose the guard we wanted to keep in Turner.. I know it hurts and it's scary.. But we have to let him and Star walk and cut some fat to improve the team.. We will be able to fill more holes and get some good Comp picks for next year.. Letting Norwell walk is the best for the team going foward.. Paying 2 guards top money is a cap killer..

Pretty much...

There was an NFL article I read that basically  laid it out that the panthers had to pick between kk/star and Turner/Norwell and with the contracts that we gave out that the decision was basically made awhile ago. IMO Turner got extended first because he was a draft pick, played better at the earlier point in his career, and age. Quite frankly when you have two players to pick from who both can be/are elite you always pick the younger player. And he's two years younger than Norwell.

Exactly.. The decision was made last year when Tra and KK got their contract that Star and Norwell were in jeopardy to walk.. At least we get some really good Comp picks because they both will get some pretty goooooooood money...

That and the fact that even though I think Norwell is the better OG at the moment, Trai definitely has the higher athletic ceiling. Norwell isn't going to improve. He's reached his ceiling. I don't think Trai has.

We'll definitely get a 3rd for Norwell and if we're lucky a 4th for Star but probably a 5th.

True, IMO it also is partly due to Turner being injury. And at th  time Gettlemen probably thought him and his staff could find another Norwell. They found later round gems in Turner, Williams, and Norwell. Let's hope that Dave left us another in Moton

I hope we don't end up with 3rd and 4th/5th rpund comp picks. It likely means that we sat on our hands and just got plucked clean. Not good.

Moton was a 2nd round pick, not exactly a late round gem. You're hoping to draft a future starter in the 2nd round.

Yeah the late round part was more so meant for Norwell, Williams, and Turner. Even though with Turner he was only a 3rd rounder since he left after his redshirt sophomore year. We can make some moves in free agency but I don't know if they' ooutweigh the valued contracts of what Norwell and Star might receive

I am not sure how much of Ryan's final year is guaranteed but if it is the bulk, it is entirely possible that he doesn't care if they cut him at all.

He'll get $2.8M if he's cut. He'll make an additional almost $6.9M if he's on the roster. His cap hit is the total of the two at $9.7M.

If he gets cut he won't get anything.  The $2.8m is dead money from a prorated bonus that would was paid in a previous year.   He has already received that.  That cap hit is going to be there regardless if he plays or not.

According to www.spotrac.com this is what he can make this year:

Salary - $4.5m

Roster Bonus - $1.5m

per game bonuses - $1.25m

Total that could be earned in 2018: $7.25m

When talking about a pay cut the easiest way to think about it is you cut the player and resign him at a new price.  At that point it is about leverage.

If we were to cut Kalil how much would he get on the open market?  Between age and injury history last year I would think around $3-4m maybe?  You have to be careful because the lower limit he might decide its not worth playing anymore and just retire.

Personally I could see them offering him around a $3m salary and keep the $1.25m in per game bonuses and lose the roster bonus.  That means the most he could earn would be $4.75m which would save the team $3m in cap space or even more if he doesn't play all 16 games.  Or they could cut him and save a lot more.

I keep thinking though if we let Norwell walk the coaches might want to keep Kalil for another year, but if we resign Norwell we might cut Kalil just to help offset some of the extra cap for Norwell.

Yeah but at RT not G. Moton played G in college two years and got demolished.

Where did you get that from? Everything I read said that as a G, he manhandled OSU DTs. Is this your thought or something concrete. Everything i remember seeing last year when he was in for jumbo packages would make me think he'd be a great run blocking guard. His frame and smarts would make me think he'd be decent pass blocking as well.

He played most of his time at RT and dominated. He was very underwhelming at RG. It's probably why Amini got the start last year and will probably get the start this year.

Sources Tell Us
"I had to go back and watch his 2015 tape when he played guard. He was a little rough at tackle this year but that isn't his spot. Big and strong as a guard. He was moving guys from Ohio State around like it was nothing." -- Area scout for NFC team

I think I'll take the word of the unnamed NFL scout over that of a poster who has probably never actually watched a Western Michigan football game. I'm pretty sure I haven't either.
