Panthers continue to hold out for Hurney

I mean obviously he hasn't been good or bad in his second stint...

But that's like Jeff fisher getting a new job and people saying he hasn't been terrible, while true his track record suggests that 7-9 is coming.

You are what your history says you are until you prove otherwise. I have no problem with Hurney in the 1st round but obviously that's the easiest round that teams SHOULD get correct. Not saying they do but the probability goes up.

That time is over this is new...until he sucks again...he doesn't

Really thought how long you want me to wait. I'm 34 now and Hurney took over when I was 17. I guess when I'm 64 he might show something but it's probably the ability to push daisies.

As long as you are a fan ...thats how long... only if the Panthers move will I consider not being a fan...

You are going to miss some of our best seasons the next few years...Hurney or not this is our time...

I want to believe you, but I really feel the opposite of that for a number of reasons, some that have nothing to do with Hurney. I love the team, but I'm in a bit of a pessimistic mood and here's why:

  • We have no leadership at the top of the organization. No owner, no real GM, nothing at the moment other than Tina.
  • Cam hasn't been the same since his MVP season. He's hurt often, and taking too many hits, I worry about his longevity. Add onto that, he isn't the most prolific pure passer in the league and he relies on his running ability to make him a top threat at the position. While he shows flashes of being an elite passer, they are just that, flashes. At this point in his career, I would like to see more consistency while throwing from our franchise QB. Before the white knights come to defend Cam, I'm not saying he sucks, I'm saying he's inconsistent.
  • Our WR1 is a borderline WR1, but best suited as a WR2. I don't think he's garbage by any means, just not the best.
  • We have no weapons for said QB other than an aging TE and a RB who is a legitimate slot receiver who was underutlized in our offensive scheme.
  • Rivera plays not to lose instead of to win. It's caused us to blow leads numerous times and it's annoying
  • We are changing both coordinator positions, and offensive installs specifically, take time. Time we don't have.
  • The division has gotten stronger the past few years. We won it three in a row, but the saints knocked last year's draft out of the park, and Falcons were able to make it back to the playoffs last year after the super bowl, something we weren't able to do.
  • Speaking of the Saints, they swept us. That has nothing to do with next year, that just sucked.
  • The defense is old and underperformed last year. Our second year corners also took a step backwards, as did Coleman. We have no long term solution in place to replace peppers or Addison if they drop off this year.
  • We may have been 11-5 last year but we certainly played like an 8-8 team at best.
  • Our schedule next season is absolutely brutal.
  • We have never had back to back winning records
  • We have the ability to re-sign Norwell, but it would require Hurney to release his buddies Ryan Kalil and Stewart, who are both aging vets at the tail end of their careers, not great in their prime players. Nothing he has done in the past has given me any indication that he would make said moves for the betterment of the team, and that makes me a sad panda.

There are a few other reasons but they are escaping me at the moment. Either way, I'm less thrilled with the direction the team is heading after this season than I was at the beginning of last season.

let's be honest, unless this investigation reveals he did something REALLY bad Hurney is going to be named GM. There's no way he isn't at this point. If ANYONE else had a legit shot they would have them the job as soon as they allegations hit.

Hurney investigation could end soon

As has been discussed, Jerry Richardson seems to be willing to fight to his last breath to make Marty Hurney GM of the Panthers again.

It's an incredibly stupid decision to choose Hurney over someone like Lake Dawson, but then most of Jerry Richardson's decisions fall under the "incredibly stupid" category.

I'll be happy when we don't have to deal with his dumbass choices anymore.

I still can't believe there have been fools on this board who have actually argued with me over the years to defend Jerry Richardson. So glad this jackass will no longer be associated with this franchise in the near future.

There were many reasons to doubt...I see one reason not to...Turner makes a lot of that go away...

At this point Hurney is the best man for the job in 2018 imo. Free agency and the time to figure out whether or not to use the franchise tag is less than 30 days out. Then the draft will be right behind it.

Too late in the game to bring in a new guy and try to get them up to speed.  Also do we really trust Tina Becker to hire the next long term GM?

Any candidate that we miss on right now will also be available next offseason if Hurney shits the bed.

How exactly has Hurney been terrible so far in his second stint?

That is a good question, and there could be an answer if you consider the context.  What weapons did Cam have down the stretch this season?  CMC, Funchess (who was banged up), and....?

I agreed with the KB trade on paper.  However, we were on a playoff run and we were thin at WR, with Samuel, Byrd, etc.  sidelined with injury.  How did we get better?  In my opinion, he wanted to do something to turn heads--to make people realize he is back as the GM.

I think this:  He knew KB was in RR's doghouse (running wrong routes, conditioning, arguing with assistant coaches during game, etc).  He would get rid of that headache for RR and the decision to renew KB's  contract at once.  By doing this, he would re-forge that bond with RR by giving him a nice extension, knowing that RR would have a voice in the hiring process.  Marty is taking care of Marty...

He has a history of this--making desperate trades--offering future first rounders for immediate picks when his job was on the line....Giving crazy money to keep our free agents.

If all GMs were equal, I would agree.  The scouts and coaching staff are still doing their homework and will fill in the GM when he arrives.  Marty may know the current roster better, but that is the only advantage he possesses--and it may not be an advantage at all.  He may be more subjective (wanting to keep his former draft picks like CJ, Ryan K, Stew) than a new face.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
