Panthers continue to hold out for Hurney

Hey Scot-lighten up-we can agree to disagree.

With someone who has an intelligent opinion, yes. A guy who's basically just sticking his fingers in his ears and going "blah blah blah I don't care what anybody says it's not true", not so much.

More important, though: We've been able to share some pretty good information on the inner workings of the Panthers with Marty Hurney as GM, and it's a fairly frightening image.

While I'll grant that Hurney can likely only do damage for this upcoming season, this season does count. It'll be the last for a few of our all time best players, and one more in the books for players in their prime like Cam, Luke and McCaffrey.

I'm beyond hoping for a competent GM until we get a competent owner.  Best case scenario for this season looks to be Hurney and Richardson doing as little damage as possible.

Absolutely agree--"damage control ".

In a way, I guess it's good to know that some of the scouting people were already aware of Marty's issues and have previously worked to prevent them from causing bigger problems.

The downside: Our front office right now is basically a three ring circus.

The stability in this organization is RR. He motivated this team last year to exceed with the poo storm going on.

He's "stubborn " ." antiquated offense"  etc--but he gets the TEAM to produce.

Hopefully , he can produce a mini-miracle next year.

Rivera I'm actually encouraged about in that he finally caught on that Shula and Dorsey needed to go.

On the flipside, he still supports Hurney, and it would have been a lot nicer if he had caught on to Shula and Dorsey a long time ago.

I have a source telling me the icing on the cake that lead to the fallout between Ron and Dave and eventually his "firing" was his unwavering loyalty to Mike Shula. Obviously tensions were already present due to the  botched handling of the Josh Norman situation and the subsequent draft.

Rivera wanted him gone after the disappointing 2016 season. Of course publicly he wasn't going to say it but behind closed doors he'd "had enough". Dave on the other hand wasn't so keen on changing things up. Afterall, we were only a season removed from a SB appearance. Dave had the mindset that we were only another "player or two away" from seeing Shula's system really blossom into a juggernaut.

Eventually tensions boiled over to the point Ron presented Richardson with a "It's me or him" ultimatum. Jerry called a meeting with Dave in a last ditch effort to smooth things over. Long story short Gettleman refused to budge on the issue and immediately resigned from his position. Jerry being Jerry wanted the story coming out to be that he had been fired (you know how his ego is) and now here we are.

Shula would have been relieved of his duties at the same time Gettleman was but Norv had informed Ron that he wasn't quite ready to get back into it but would definitely be ready at the conclusion of the 2017 season. Make no mistake about it, the Norv hiring was a year in the making.

Initially I was hesitant to believe it but after hearing the stories coming out of New York about how Shula is "one of Gettlemans guys" I've changed my tune. I hate what a mess he left this team in and you really have to question his judgment after this. But on a personal level you have to be happy for him that he got his guy back.

Some folks are so mediocre that to them, knowing someone who knows someone connected is unimaginable.

I taught Brandon Beane in high school. (South Stanly High).  I know a lot of folks who knew Brandon, and they would ask him questions.  Brandon would not reveal inappropriate info, but he would clarify misconceptions.  I shared a few ideas here that came from him (indirectly--we spoke once since the 1990s, when he was a HS student--getting our cars inspected).  It was funny to see how many of these numb nuts would call me out.

Here is the great Marty Hurney since returning:

  • Keeping 2 kickers, ultimately losing 2 players as a result (STOOPID)
  • Trading away our #1 WR while on a playoff run with 2 WRs on IR (forget the trade on paper--the timing was idiotic and reckless)
  • Signing RR to an extension (I believe it was politically motivated; knowing RR would campaign for him)

I can support much of this if you simply reflect back on the one draft Marty engineered when John Fox was a lame duck coach. Fox did not communicate with Marty about the draft before or during.

Here is your football mind--

  • Jimmy Clausen:  I did KNOW that we tried to trade up with the Rams at #33, offering our second, the first rounder next year, and a sixth rounder.  The Rams refused at some point, then Marty added the sixth before getting pulled back.  KC and Minnesota--both desperate for QBs--passed on MH  in the first AND second rounds.  They knew.  Bust
  • Brandon Lafell:  His best pick, an average player at best. Small hands, average at best speed.
  • Armanti Edwards:  Brandon told me (at the service station) that Marty was obsessed with the idea that Colts wanted Armanti Edwards, so he coughed up our second rounder (which turned out to be the #33 pick) and New England was happy to prey on our stupid GM. Bust
  • Eric Norwood:  Never a fit in a 4-3.  Nice player in college.  Bust.

I could have done better than this with a 12 pack, blindfold, and dartboard.

Lol trust me I have more inside info on the panthers than anyone on this board and that's facts. I just don't go around spewing bs

Man, believe what you want and ignore the truth. We were counting on two already IR’d players, one of whom went back on IR after a few games and one who reinjured himself the first game back and missed another game. We got lucky with Olsen and didn’t with Byrd. That’s a dumb risk. Shepard already sucked so if Hurney was expecting him to get better he’s a moron. Clay and Samuel had less than 10 NFL catches in he first 8 games and Samuel was both raw and injured all of preseason. Again a dumb risk that again didn’t pay off as Samuel was IR’d two games after KB was traded and Clay dropped as many balls as Shepard did.

Keep telling yourself it didn’t matter, especially when we lost our playoff game when Clay couldn’t catch a TD that KB would have. Amazing to layout the facts and you just want to live in a Hurney bubble. He fuged up and it absolutely cost us when we had to trot poo out there at WR with our best one having a shoulder injury. He better pick an all-pro late in the 3rd since he cost us a shot and sure as poo let Cam down.

I agree with you, the KB trade was just a bad deal for us at that time.  The belief that our offense got better was misplaced I think.  Cam got healthier and that helped, but we never really were able to use that supposed speed much.  And we ended up with only one beat up receiver that could actually catch the ball.

But in the end, it may have been to our benefit.  While you never really know for certain, imo even with KB, I don't think we would have beaten Philly in Philly.  So we might have made it one game further.  While that would have been great, KB would be gone this year, and we wouldn't get much for him.
