Would you sell the farm for Barkley...

We one piece away from a Lombardi? No? Then hell no

I like your way of thinking. If we were solid at every position and all that was lacking was a breakaway threat in the backfield, then go for it. But, since that's not the case such a move would probably backfire because it would leave too many holes on the team.

I'll  go back to your original question: "We one piece away from a Lombardi". Back in 1977, the Dallas Cowboys and the football world as a whole realized they were literally one piece away from getting to the Super Bowl. A talent deficiency at HB cost hurt them in losses to Pittsburgh in the 75 SB and the Rams in the playoffs the following year.  They moved up and took Tony Dorsett. He won rookie of the year an the Cowboys won the SB that season. During his 1st 6 seasons in Dallas, Dorsett started in 2 SB's, played in 5 NFC title games, and when he retired only Water Payton was ahead of him on the all-time rushing list . Good move on the part of the Cowboys I'd say.

The 49ers' moved up about 15 spots to get Jerry Rice in 1985. They had to give up a bit to get him, but they had just finished the 84 season 15-1 and had destroyed the Dolphins in the SB. They could afford to make such a move because the team had no weaknesses on either side of the ball. I think we all know how that move turned out.

I hope the Panthers will one day be so good that they can afford to make such a move to put them over the top. Now is not that time. Besides, far too many backs come out of Penn State and fail to live up to the hype.

Those teams needed less and had HOF talent at multiple positions

The Panthers have way more draft needs  to move up and take a Rb especially after taking a Rb in the top ten last draft

We took a very talented RB early

need to compliment him

we have an OC and prob wont have stew so the door is wide open for him

hes a workhorse feature back

McCaffery is a chess piece. Not a full on feature back. His ablitly between the tackles and running the football are still limited at this level. Break tackle ability is also below average. That is not a workhorse. Stop kidding yourself.

So, here's the thing. I've watched every single snap of Barkleys college career. My dad graduated from PSU and we had season tickets growing up, so I'm a big fan.

Saquon Barkley is the BEST player I've ever seen play at PSU. My dad agrees. He has been watching PSU games since the late 60's, and me since the late 80's.

Barkley is just so special. His combination of speed, power, agility, quickness, burst, intelligence, catching agility, route running, competitive nature, I could go on and on.

And he's a fantastic person off the field, a great teammate, and a student of the game.

Barkley can be a true game changer at the next level. He just gets yards and finds the endzone. 4.3 speed with the power to run through NFL defenders. You can send him up the middle and he'll find a hole or move the pile forward. You can run him off the edge and his speed will get him around the corner. You can send him out in passing routes and not only will he get separation, but he will run a crisp route and make incredible catches plus run after the catch. You can throw him a screen and he'll take it to the house with his vision in the open field and incredible speed.

All of that said, I don't think he's worth trading the farm to go get. This team has too many holes, and trading up to get Barkley would create even more holes. If we want any chance at competing next season (Kalil and TDs last, and maybe Pepp too), then we need to go hard for All In Compete Now moves. Not trade future assets for a rookie.

If you took the assets you are willing to give up for Saquon and used them to fill in the current roster holes with veteran players, this team is competitive at a Super Bowl level for the next 3-5 years.

Barkley doesn't immediately elevate us to Super Bowl level because the OL, WR, and defense all have so many other holes to fill.

And its still a no...

If we were picking say 3rd this year and it cost us nothing to pick Barkley I'm still not sure I pick him there.  Too many needs and we just picked a RB last year.

If we picked at 3 then it would be a great pick...CMC isnt a RB...we need at least 1 RB this off-season,probably 2...

No

I'm not a big fan of taking a RB anywhere in the first round actually, even though it can be tempting at times.  You just have to be disciplined.

I understand why people get excited over RBs, they score, you see their highlights on tv, they seem like safe picks that can contribute early.  Nobody gets excited over a guard or some DT that might take 2 years to develop.  I think coaches and GMs are guilty of this also.

With that being said I could actually see us taking a RB this year, I have a feeling the draft might fall in such a way that one will be one there at 24 that our GM and/or coaches can talk themselves into.  Namely Guice or Michel.

Sure, but I think we will look at RB later as many folks have said here...spending a top 3 on him?  Just not sure I'd go that route.

Its all speculation since we dont have a top 3 pick...the pt is thats the only way it would be reasonable to take a pick like that...
