Giants hire Mike Shula as OC

It's silly to think Gettleman didn't have any say in this hire.  No matter what Shurmur wanted to do at OC, basic logic should tell you that he at least consulted with Gettleman to get his thoughts on Shula and if he would be a good fit (any competent leader will utilize every resource at their disposal before making such an important hire).  And if Gman thought he was as incompetent as most of the Huddle does, he most definitely would have stepped in and had a conversation with Shurmur about why he shouldn't hire Shula.

But ultimately, it was Shurmur's call.  He made the final decision, and he will live with the consequences...either good or bad.  But like in most cases, decisions like these are more collaborative efforts with the coach having final say rather than the decision being made in a vacuum without any management input.

So, the truth of the matter is that both sides in this argument are partially correct.  There really isn't any reason for so many people to get so up in arms.

I'll be honest, I don't think it mattered that much.  IMO, we had the talent to beat them regardless, but it was more self-inflicted mistakes and lack of execution that cost us the SB.  That's not to absolve Shula, if he would have instilled some new wrinkles it would have gone a long way into catching Denver unprepared at times.  But the truth is that by the time the SB rolls around, most teams have shown everything they have.  Sure, there might be a trick play or new formation here or there, but for the most part, they are what they are.

IMO, the biggest issue wasn't that we didn't change things up from what we had done all season, it's that we didn't adjust to Remmers not being able to handle Miller.  Remmers needed help, but never really got it.  And to me, that's what really hurt our offense the most.

This is actually a really good hire for the Giants.

Shurmur's the play-caller. There's no debating that. However, Shula will have the ability to design plays as well. Shurmur has far more experience with play-calling and will likely have his own input, while Shula's designs (which have been pretty good and actually copied a bit by the Eagles against the Patriots) will help out.

Keep Shula away from in-game plya-calling and adjusting and he's not half bad.

If they get a good QB going, they could be a tough team next year.

They have a good QB...crash and burn is all I have to say...

Had a suspicion that might be the case.

Reich didn't call plays in Philly. McVay runs the Rams offense. And Jackson didn't even have an OC until this year.

It's not that unusual these days.

I almost wish we could get this from Ron Rivera. Would be interesting to see him directly calling the defense plays.

That's all on Shula though. If your opponent knows what's coming you're at a massive disadvantage. As far ad Remmers goes, evetyone knee speed rushers were his weakness and Von Miller is the best in the business. For Shula not to do something to help him out was setting the guy up to fail. Beasley owning him a few weeks prior should've been all the proof Shula needed to know he had to give Remmers help against Miller and he had two weeks to draw it up. In the game, it's maddening that Shula never did anything to counter Denver's blue dog blitzing that they used to nullify his extra blockers. Screens and quick slants. Honestly, it's offensive football 101.

Good points, but I seriously doubt it. I'm looking for a disaster for the Gianys.
