Giants hire Mike Shula as OC

If Shula were hired by any team other than the Giants, the ridicule here would be nearly outright unanimous.

Instead we get to witness normally intelligent fans suddenly pivoting so fast that they about million dollar baby themselves in the process.

Just now, Mr. Scot said:

Louis Riddick criticized his route design in a critique if either our last game of the season or the only playoff game (I forget which one).

Looks like the Giants are going to be following the Eagles example of having an offensive head coach call the plays while the coordinator serves primarily as a position coach. One difference being that the Giants will have the OC and QB coach consolidated into one person.

Not to get off subject but did you read PK's MMQB article on their offensive coaching set up? It. Amazing how much Groh, Reich, and Pederson work together when it comes to play design with no one person being more important than the other. Check it out when you have time. Interesting stuff.

If he were hired as an actual OC, ridicule would be warranted, especially given that he's unfamiliar with this system.

But that's why I suspected from the beginning that he might not be calling the plays. Since then, the story has come out did he's essentially a QB coach with an OC title.

I'd have been in favor of that if we would have done it here (and said so)

I think Shula will be ok with the Giants.  Isn't Shurmur supposed to be an offensive guy?  If so, Shula will not play the same role he did with the Panthers.  Shula's offense was always was ok, but his play calls were suspect and he struggled with in-game adjustments.

Rivera's a defense guy.  He needed a better offense mind to work with to balance his strengths.  That's why G-man wanted Shula out and why eventually Norv was brought in.

Shurmur just needs to make sure he has a good defensive coordinator.

Only place I have ever really heard Shula's play design questioned has been here on the Huddle. Outside of that, it has largely been praised whenever I've heard it discussed. Now the actually play calling might have come into question, but not his ability to design plays as they are widely considered some of the most creative in the league.

Of course when you pigeon hole yourself and the only thing you ever read is "Shula sucks", and  comments about "crayons", and "checkers vs chess" eventually that's what you believe because that's all you care to know.

some news reports about players highlighted the reason why they shut down our offense, and these came out in the last few seasons. one of them cited the fact that they knew exactly when we were going to snap the ball the entire game and shula made absolutely no effort to adjust this. there was another report about how a defense had our number and figured out how most of our plays worked and that shutting down our offense was like eating candy. it might have been the falcons.

i personally thought shula did a good job as a QB coach, but when he got promoted to OC he stopped being an asset.
