Nobody actually ever suggested that Gettleman was perfect, just that he was significantly better than Hurney. And it's true, he was.

The only true, valid and complete measure of a GM is the success of the teams he builds.  Gettleman's time as a GM was the most successful period in Panthers history.  And please don't bother with the idiotic "he had Hurney's core" argument.  So did Hurney, and he sucked with it.  In point of fact, two of Hurney's three (out of eleven) successful seasons came with a core that was handed to him by George Seifert.

And yes, cutting Steve Smith was actually a good move despite all the histrionics fans went into afterwards. Smith is retired.  Get over it.

Gettleman is now gone, and he's never coming back, because the Panthers are owned by an idiot.  Marty Hurney was gone, and then was brought back, again because the Panthers are owned by an idiot.  The good news now is that we have the chance (hopefully) to move on to a new GM who's highly qualified.  And after that, we'll also get a new owner, one who hopefully won't be a dumbass and will set back and let the football people do their job.

You can continue the endless (and stupid) argument over who was better all you want, but lemme give you a challenge to actually stretch your mind.

Give me a good reason, one logical reason, why the Panthers should opt to keep Marty Hurney over a guy like Lake Dawson.

As perfect as man could be...the immaculate GM....the downplay only comes now that he's gone...

Gettelmen was the GM not the coach.. Those players playing better and developing had nothing to do with who was the GM...

How about the Coach that Hurney hired.. Rivera becoming a better coach also helping Gman have successs.. Does that count at all?? There were at least 4 to 5 games Rivera lost on bad Coaching his 1st 2 years under Hurney.. He'll there was a STAT he lost more games by less than a TD his 1st 2 years than anybody.. That wasn't a GM thing.. Gettelmen got the benefit of a more experience coach as well..

The "cheerleader" and the "other people" are basically following the wishes of Jerry Richardson in choosing Marty Hurney. 

And crediting the guy who fired the better GM so he could bring back Hurney with having "brains" is kinda stupid.

They may not have intended to give them a serious shot, but every candidate they brought in was and is highly qualified for the job.  More qualified than Hurney, who's demonstrated he's bad at it.  In fact, based on things learned recently, it might be borderline miraculous that Hurney's prior stint wasn't even worse than it was.

Its not guaranteed that the new owner will do anything.  This whole thing is a big crap fest.  For all we know the Panthers as a sports organization has already seen its best days pass.  We might get a Jerry Jones for an owner - wouldn't that be fun ?  Most of the people demanding Hurney be removed think we cant do worse.  Oh yeah ?

If the the cheerleader and others are doing the wishes of JR in hiring Hurney, what makes you think they aren't doing JRs wishes by hiring one of the other candidates if that comes to pass?  Maybe Rivera didn't show up for Dawsons second interview because he was already going to vote for hiring him ?

No - you have to give credit to JR for going out and making a concerted effort to find the best gm he could when he organized his search that brought us Gettleman. That is not what is happening now.  This years gm search seems rushed and half baked to me. Maybe its because of all the turmoil in the front office - and for my way of thinking it isnt a good time to be making major moves into the unknown.  We have no real idea what happened that led to Gettlemans firing and probably never will.  You can theorize all you want, but all you have is a theory.  Not a fact.  And you skew your theory to fit your own little world view.

I don't know what is going to happen with this team, but my opinion is that we should hold with what we have for the upcoming season and see what new ownership brings. There is no guarantee that Hurney will be replaced by new ownership, but I would bet on it and I don't bet.
