Evan Silva's Panthers offseason needs

Carolina Panthers

Wide Receiver: 2017 second-round pick Curtis Samuel flashed enough in limited opportunities to have an inside track on Carolina’s 2018 third receiver job, but he can’t be counted on as a surefire starter. Devin Funchess is entering his contract year, and the Panthers have next to nothing at wideout beyond that. Greg Olsen’s advancing age (33 in March) further solidifies pass catcher as a primary need. Under vertical-oriented new OC Norv Turner, the Panthers should emphasize adding a downfield threat.

Offensive Line: The Panthers’ line struggled in both 2016 and 2017 in part due to injuries but largely to sheer ineffectiveness. Ex-GM Dave Gettleman whiffed badly on his five-year, $55.5 million investment on LT Matt Kalil. Stud LG Andrew Norwell’s contract is up, and he will command top dollar atop an otherwise barren interior O-Line market. C Ryan Kalil announced 2018 will be his final season.

Defensive Line: Cornerback also warrants a mention after CBs James Bradberry and Daryl Worley’s underwhelming sophomore campaigns, and slot CB Captain Munnerlyn’s apparent late-season falling out with the coaching staff. Up front, the Panthers need to replace free agent DT Star Lotulelei, while DE Julius Peppers’ contract has expired after the 38-year-old led the team in sacks (11). Typically, Ron Rivera’s team has emphasized defensive line over secondary when deciding how to value assets.

This offseason is going to be rough and we may have to say fug the future cap if we are really set on trying to make a Super Bowl run. 

We need to tag or resign Norwell or else Matt Kalil will get Cam killed.

Money has to be spent on WR. As of now it is the biggest hole even with Samuel and Byrd coming back off injuries. It’s an even bigger deal now that Norv is in control. Restructure Stewart or bring in a cheap power back as replacement. It shouldn’t really be an issue.

Need at least 1 starting caliber corner, safety, defensive end, and a back up nose tackle. You can’t bring Star back at starter money with all of those needs. Coaches are going to have to make it work with Butler because you can’t tie up that much money at DT.

We can’t rely so heavily on the draft and rookies for the coming season if we are serious about going all the way. This offense can’t sit back and rely on let’s say a WR picked towards the end of the first round to come in and put up 1000 + yards and help lead the offense.

Unfortunately, Dave left us with some holes that were seriously exposed last season. We also have some high priced vets on their last legs who will be gone next season. We are not in the greatest shape when it comes to cap space and we are going to need to spend a good chunk of cap if we want to bring in a WR worth a damn. DBs aren't cheap either and we need at least 2 imo. Long story short, who ever becomes the new GM is going to have their hands full.

It's going be a tough offseason when our most exciting re-signings will be Graham Gano and Ed Dickson.

If that is the case and I am a guy like Kalil or Davis I am saying fug it and retiring with my health. I am sure Davis would love to spend another season watching our secondary get torched and Kalil watching (probably from the sideline if history has shown us anything) Cam get killed because he has no one to throw to.

...Yea...in retrospect, DB had faults that hosed this team in different ways than Hurney...hosed is hosed...

I didn't like Dave or Marty and I want new blood in here.

Also I don't mean to completely fug the cap à la Hurney 2010. I don't want a guy like Dave who just dumpster dived to fill major holes and when he actually did spend overpays for a guy like Matt Kalil when there were clearly better options on the market. Don't play hardball with valuable assets. Still can't believe he let Ginn walk twice. I just want a nice middle ground. Is that asking too much?

I agree. Cam and Luke aren’t getting younger and we need to spend. I feel we need a splash on DE like Ansah instead of a wr. We could draft someone like Kirk and sign Crabtree. Whatever happens, we need to be aggressive in FA.

I think the market for even a guy like Crabtree is going to be higher than what some expect. You won't be able to sign a guy like that with a Russel Shepard contract.

I wouldn't blow my whole budget for Ansah. When you can help 2 or 3 needs at WR and secondary help.. Draft a young DE to go with a resigned PEP, Addison, Hall and Horton..
