Jason La Confora: "hearing that Park Avenue is putting pressure on [Panthers] to go outside the organization for their hires and make this go away."

See, and therein lies the problem.

The people who operate within the leadership of the Panthers organization work in an atmosphere where loyalty to Jerry Richardson is the ultimate virtue.

How else do you explain people like Ron Rivera and Steve Wilks - men who I would normally consider stand up guys - rallying support for someone as sleazy as Jerry Richardson has been shown to be?

If I could ask Ron Rivera one question right now, it would be this: How would you respond if you found out a man talked to your daughter the way Jerry Richardson was talking to the employees in his office?

Would you stand up for that guy? Would you defend him as a person of good character? And if it upset her, would you tell her not to worry about it?

It just boggles the mind.

Probably because they have a clue and you dont...

It's a shame this all could not have broke out when Dave was still GM. Now we are faced with the most certainly we will hire "someone" to be GM.

It's a shame it had to "break out " at all.

It'd be nice if we could actually come to a good conclusion without being forced into it.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you can get Richardson to believe there's a better candidate than Hurney unless you drag him to that point kicking and screaming,

I've come to an understanding that Jerry Richardson is somebody with a very deeply embedded narcissism in his personality. That understanding is causing me to reshape my opinion on some things.

For one, like many others, I was of the belief that Richardson was trying to get Hurney in place as the permanent GM in order to give him one final big paycheck and reward him for his loyalty.

I no longer believe that's true.

I now think that the effort to install Hurney as permanent GM is being done to give Jerry Richardson continued control of the organization even after it's sold.

Richardson knows that Hurney is completely loyal to him. And I would guess that part of the interview screening for prospective owners would be to determine whether they would keep Hurney in place or not.

Basically, with Hurney as GM, Richardson remains the man in charge, even if the team officially belongs to someone else. What better way to guide his "legacy"?

Heck, look at the current situation. Richardson officially excused himself from the day to day of the team, but Joe Person recently acknowledged that he's still involved. I'd say "involved" doesn't begin to cover it. He left his former assistant in charge for a reason.

"That's nuts", you say? Of course it is, but it's also completely consistent with how a narcissist thinks. They believe the world revolves around them and that, regardless of any evidence to the contrary, they're smarter than everybody else. And the most valuable resource that any narcissist can have in their lives...is someone who agrees with that idea.

For Jerry Richardson, that's Marty Hurney.

Even if it's not a condition of ownership, Richardson may believe that any other owner will see Marty Hurney the same way that he does. And of course, you'd have to be stupid to fire somebody that gifted, right?

It also doesn't help that Jerry Richardson is way up there in years. Age can amplify narcissism to the nth degree, to the point that a person is barely even in touch with reality other than the reality that they shape in their own mind.

I think that's where we are with Richardson at this point.

As has been said before, the sooner he's out of the picture, the better.

I'm sorry, I don't buy what you're selling.

Shocked to see people embarrassing themselves to defend JR when he didn’t even deny a single allegation.

No, just agreed to sell the team, by all accounts believing that the NFL would drop their investigation if he did that.  They didn't (oops).

And does anyone remember at this point that this whole mess started with the Panthers promising to "investigate themselves"?

Seriously, who in the hell thought they could actually get away with that? :eyeroll:

If the SI story was completely made up, wouldn’t Jerry be screaming from the cliffs to defend his invaluable honor? Would a “self-made” billionaire sit back and take these slanderous lies without suing the fledging rag SI for all they are worth for publishing such tripe lies?

Surely JR must be too noble of a man to not even address the allegations that paint him as a power hungry old pervert that’s probably gotten everything he’s ever wanted for at least the past 50 years, besides a Super Bowl trophy.

Everything from the swift sale announcement to the timing of Ron’s renewal to Tina’s promotion to this GM search charade are the actions of someone who is trying to look like they’re distancing themselves from an organization while actually planting lackeys on their way out.

Here is the problem with that theory. What gyrations would you be willing to resort to or even feel are warranted when all that  might buy would  be control of the team for maybe 6 months. Big deal.

This whole conspiracy theory would hold up if Rivhardson were not selling the team and was still planning to.control things from the sidelines.  But it would be a lot of manipulating for little gain. Now if you didn't want your Billion dollar baby to go to hell and you  wanted your investment to be worth maximum dollar, you might opt for consistency and want folks you know in charge to keep things going until the team is sold. After all his goal is to get a maximum price for his shares.  After the new owners come in,  he is history. So sure he wants control until the sale. We are talking 2-3 billion dollars. He doesn't need power, he has money. Tons of it. And money is power. You don't have to be a narcissist to want to preserve your assets by keeping Hurney in the short run given we are already well into the offseason. Now if it looks like that might not happen he will have to go to plan B. But who wouldn't want to control their investment they poured their heart into for the past 25 years and now are cashing out.

bringing him back has already done that. i have as much faith in hurney being able to evolve into a good GM as i had in shula becoming a competent OC. 2018 will be fine. it's every year after that i don't have much faith in him being able to have a positive impact.

Well at least we got out of the Gettelmen mess..
