When you wish upon a Star...

Star is a talented player who does an important job well.

But fans tend to underestimate the replaceability of the service he provides. It's not where you want to drop top-tier money. The teams that have invested most heavily into services of that kind...are not winning teams. Bring in a kid and spend the money elsewhere.

All I know is we will miss him when he is gone...

·       Star would be foolish not to find a 3-4 team looking for a stud NT. I think 3-4 teams may pay more for his skill set than we should.

I agree with this. I do think 3-4 teams value players like Star more than most 4-3 teams. If you don't have a man-beast NT to anchor your defense in a 3-4 set you're screwed.

Folks get too caught up in sacks and stuff.  Let's look at team tackles and run defense.  How did our LBs do before and after him?

We've had a below average run defense prior to Star.  Since 2013, 4 top 10 finishes, and 16th place was the worst year.

He's a really good run defender.  We need to have a plan for that moving forward.  While the NFL is very much a passing league now, teams can and will use the run to win games.

Because that’s his technique. He’s basically a nose tackle in opposite scheme.

Ding ding ding

This is why I think we have a real shot at resigning him

He is a Nose Tackle, he isnt a Rush tackle.

Brandon Williams became the HIGHEST paid NT in the league last year for the Ravens.  Signing 5 years 54 million

In comparison, KK isnt even the highest paid Rush DT at 5 years 80 million

Even at 315 Star is still slightly undersized for the nose tackle position but he has the strength to play it.

However, with Star and KK roughly the same size the difference in their ability to rush the passer is quite substantial. I don't buy into the excuse that it isn't what he's asked to do because on passing downs the NT still is required to rush the passer just like everyone else.

Don't get me wrong, he is a good player but he isn't the Ngata type player that everyone wanted him to be.

If the Panthers feel like they are losing something in Star they will draft Vea in the first to replace him.

I know Star was happy to be drafted and is happy to be in the NFL, but I don't think that he was ever happy about being here.  Maybe it's just his natural vibe,  but I just think that it took him a little off guard to end up here.

Obviously,  I'm not sweating his loss.

We have no one on the roster that can do what Star does, his double teams open it up for KK, Addison and peppers on the dline and for Luke and TD at LB. Butler can't do that effectively like Star. He's easily the second most important defensive player on the team.

It is so hard to appreciate what he does and harder to compare him to others.  They will have to draft a NT (or free agent) if he leaves.  I think a 3-4 team pays him more than we can.

Highest paid NT in the NFL (who is in a 3-4 sceme) is making 10.8 a year in his 5 year 54 Mil contract.

The position pays Waay less than a 4-3 3-tech or Rush DT.  KK isnt even the highest paid at 5 years 80 mil or 16 a year.

Star isnt even one of the top NT in the league last year.  Poe a 2x probowler could only get a 1 year 8 mil.  Star should pickup somewhere between 8.5-9 a year which can fit our budget especially if we dont resign Norwell
