Oh I know that, you know that. Hell the whole world knows that. Makes this look worse, I mean it's one thing to hire him to begin with but this and this way...  ehhh

I mean I like Hurney and thought he got a bad rap for doing what JR wanted during those last few years. So I don't think he's as bad as many here think he is but let's be honest about this whole thing.

It stinks to high heaven and not just because of the court stuff with his ex wife (which I don't believe most of) It stinks because of the way it's being ran.

Those other candidates, if they don't have a chance just tell them and get this garbage show over. yesh

I think Hurney's a great guy, but a lousy GM.  So yeah, it stinks, but honestly the team has handled this very poorly, especially given that Richardson is under investigation for using a racial slur on a scout.

If they really wanted to just install Marty Hurney, what they probably should have done was just interview Don Gregory and then name Hurney GM.  Does Gregory cooperate with that?  I don't know, but that kind of thing happens a lot.  Yes, people would have griped about it, but that was gonna happen anyway.

Instead, they made a big deal of bringing in three candidates with very good qualifications.  That's a great idea if you actually intend to give them a fair shot. But bringing three quality minority candidates in only to turn around and hand the job to a less qualified white guy?  Geez. Do you really think people aren't gonna see through that?

Man, this team pulls some stupid stunts sometimes.

Possibly taken out of context?

My opinion of the stupidity of the post is based on the absurd idea of the NFL forcing the Panthers to hire anyone.  The Panthers can elect to hold out on Hurney, or change direction and hire someone else, but the NFL can not force them to hire anyone.

No, I understood that.

But if that's what they do, and the NFL investigation drags on for weeks (which is quite possible; look how long the Richardson investigation is taking) then you're sitting here with nobody in charge while other teams are signing your players.

Put Rivera in charge?  Cool.  How much contract negotiation experience does Rivera have again?  Beane did that the last time Hurney was fired, and Beane doesn't work here anymore.

No, the NFL can't force them to hire a certain person, but they're under no obligation to move quickly on Hurney.  So if the Panthers wanted to push the issue, they likely only windup hurting themselves.

Well,  I was never sure they were rubberstamping Hurney in the first place when they brought all these qualified candidates to come in and interview.  I thought it was a telltale sign that these guys were black, not that I believe that being black has ANYTHING to do with their qualifications or lack thereof.  I mean,  everyone has every reason to be cynical, but since I first heard of these guys I thought that something else may be going on here (irrespective of trumped up allegations against Hurney). Moreover, I think that Ron Rivera is a man of high character and principle,  and I have a hard time believing that he would be part of a total mockery of what he thinks is right, regardless of a Rooney Rule or any other rule.  I just don't believe he rolls like that.

The whole situation stinks.  Hurney's ex did this to hurt his career, but while the NFL is double investigating the Panthers, we're stuck in limbo with major deadlines on the horizon.

I really hate it for the guys they interviewed.  Honestly, would they want to come in under the current situation, and then possibly get fired by the new ownership?  It's a chance at being a GM, but you might get canned within a few weeks.

If they wouldn't want to be hired into this situation, why would they interview in the first place?

Of the four, Hurney is the only one with multiple years of GM experience.  I would say that he is the one most qualified.

Martin Mayhew was a GM for eight years.

Jimmy Raye was interim GM for the Colts.

All three of these guys have demonstrated that they can get hired into high front office positions by somebody other than Jerry Richardson, and on more than one occasion. Marty Hurney has clearly demonstrated that nobody other than Jerry Richardson will hire him in so much as a consultant role.

Being qualified don't make you a good GM. Look at what Hurney did before with our cap monies. He overpaid players and couldn't pay the players we needed to fill holes with good contracts. The 3 being interviewed have just as good a record at being a GM as Hurney does and maybe even more so. Carolina needs someone that will not put us in cap hell again and do the job right first time and do it well. Hurney has shown that he is not a great GM when he was with us either. Just because of what his ex-wife did don't mean that gives a definite hire at GM spot for him to take.
