I wish that were true.

It’s joe person.  Even if he did put down his Pina colada (that he roofied himself) long enough to actually report something credible, “major input” isn’t the same as actually making the decision. Granted, it’s different than “nothing to do with it” like I was under the impression of, but as someone who everyone knows is selling the team he shouldn’t have any say in it. And even if he does, nothing would stop the new owners from using the Hurney contract as toilet paper and telling him to fug off.

You don't need inside sources to see that.  He basically put his direct assistant in the owner's chair.

Throw in that the committee that was given the oversight included two people who had already publicly stated that Hurney should keep the job.

From Joe Person: How long can panthers pause GM search?

Here's the basics...

Jerry Richardson is trying to wait out the NFL investigation so he can give the job to Hurney.

The NFL, for the moment, is continuing its investigation.  No word on a time frame.  Could be quick.  Could drag out.

Meanwhile, the Fritz Pollard Alliance might not be satisfied with Richardson leaving everyone else twisting in the wind while he tries desperately to keep Marty Hurney in the GM chair.

Sheesh :eyeroll:

Remember, it was apparently pressure from the Alliance that had prompted the team to do the interviews in the first place.  Now they might be fed up with Richardson putting off the decision.  They, like everyone else, seem to have caught on to his BS.

My gut feeling is that we still end up with Marty Hurney because Jerry Richardson would push through hell and high water to make that happen, but hopefully it's only for this season.

Said it the other day when the news came out about his wife that the team had paused it's GM search to wait out the NFL.

Basically what this amounts to is Hurney took a paid leave to not show up at the office but is still running things through someone else in the building so the team doesn't loose any ground during this time period. So it's kinda like a leave, maybe more like a vacation... lol

yeah no poo - i've changed my username a couple times but I used roast you and that idiot duke fan who no longer posts here on a weekly basis.

At least you quoted a reputable source. I'm not reading 8 pages of this crap but I did see where MrScot said that old man Richardson is trying rig the system to give it to Hurney? which one is it? Re-hiring Marty as GM could be one of the worst moves this franchise could make.

you are full of cat crap, sir

I can tell you for sure that JR is getting what he wants while Tina runs the team, reason he put her in charge is he can trust her. Can also guarantee that he talks to her every day to make sure things go the way he wants them to go. Until the team is sold, it's still very much the JR show just with Tina running it for the time being.

But you don't pause a search for one candidate's issues unless that's the guy you really want.

I can't help wondering how the NFL feels about that.

Oh I know that, you know that. Hell the whole world knows that. Makes this look worse, I mean it's one thing to hire him to begin with but this and this way...  ehhh

I mean I like Hurney and thought he got a bad rap for doing what JR wanted during those last few years. So I don't think he's as bad as many here think he is but let's be honest about this whole thing.

It stinks to high heaven and not just because of the court stuff with his ex wife (which I don't believe most of) It stinks because of the way it's being ran.

Those other candidates, if they don't have a chance just tell them and get this garbage show over. yesh

The NFL can't force them to hire anybody. They could tell them who they shouldn't hire, but they can't make them hire anybody. And the Panthers don't have to hire anybody, so it has to be somebody they wanted.

This place is an affront to common sense these days.

I agree.  Flat out stupid.  Another prime example:

If it's not Hurney, you have to assume extending Rivera and whoever we're about to hire as GM has been approved by the parties looking to buy the Panthers.

If you have no existing equity you don’t get a vote.  Simple as that.

I’m thinking about buying $2B in Amazon stock.  Do you think Bezos is running his Talent Development hires by me before that $ actually is spent??  Nope.

I imagine that they don't like it very much but he's selling the team and he's probably the third most powerful owner in the NFL. So they'll let it slide for now and try and move the sell along as quickly as possible.

Not entirely.

NFL investigations do tend to take time, especially since they got embarrassed on a couple of past incidents.

Right now is prime time for signing your own players.  If you hold out for Hurney and the investigation drags on, then you don't have an experienced contract negotiator talking to them.  Plus within a few weeks, we start getting into free agency decisions like whether you want to use the franchise tag and such.

Yeah, you can hold out for "your guy" but that's basically cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Possibly taken out of context?

My opinion of the stupidity of the post is based on the absurd idea of the NFL forcing the Panthers to hire anyone.  The Panthers can elect to hold out on Hurney, or change direction and hire someone else, but the NFL can not force them to hire anyone.
