Beware false charges of nepotism - or the belief that family connections are automatically disqualifying.

My oldest son, when he was growing up, got a full scholarship in soccer to a school I had coached at - having had no other offers. There is no doubt that without my connections, there would have been no scholarship - anywhere. However, that's more of a reflection of soccer's abysmal scouting network in this country than his ability level...he went on to excel in NCAA and ended up having a four-year pro career (MLS and later the 2.Bundesliga).

My youngest son, who actually posts at the Huddle as well, has had some real opportunities this year (his senior year) as a backup quarterback, despite his extremely short height for the position (somewhere between 5'4" and 5'5" at this point), and a lot of the parents around the team assume it's because of my NEFARIOUS INFLUENCE. In reality, his coach and I are barely passing acquaintances, and all of his teammates have always known that he belongs, because he has shown it in practice. He's one big growth spurt away from walking onto a college team and blowing people away. He's got It. (Love you, Tomás!)

So, sometimes there's more to the story than you know. And sometimes that family connection is just a leg up that a genuine talent needed to get seen. And yeah, sometimes that leg up gets a genuine talent advanced faster than other genuine talents...such is real life, comrade.

Dave found multiple starters pee draft udfa. Hurney found one starter per draft and udfa.

lol...what do we need again for the upcoming season? gman loaded us with second string depth ...still need CB , still need LT, still need S at both spots...on top of other positions we didn't plan for and draft for...TE, RB, C,WR...

I would try to explain to you that you only get 7 picks a year and that he solved both G positions one being a udfa, found two udfa to replace Kalil, found a RT, solved our DT problems in one year, all the while being in cap hell but yeah Hurney is better. I mean he never put us in cap hell or anything.

so with udfa he had extra picks... oh wait no he traded picks away...your math doesn't add up we don't get 7 a yr...I never said Hurney was better...I just said the circle of life keeps taking us round and round which is true...

You get 7 draft picks a year unless Hurney is your GM. I know that can be confusing when we rarely have them all. Dave did trade picks away but those were extra picks from trades. Now stay with me. Hurney normally hit on one or maybe two guys in the draft. Dave hit 3 almost every year plus finding talent in udfa. So yes that is extra picks.

this isn't about Hurney...nor was my comment... you hate Hurney, great...we get it...we had 7 picks once in Gman drafts...and if he traded extras thats even more wasted trades... he can get udfa but cant draft the same talent...that is basically your argument

I think some are just piling on Jerry at this point.  I mean if the guy is qualified, is it really a big deal? So the grandson had a easy in because of Jerry.

I mean Sam Mills' son got a job with the Panthers.  Now how did he get the job.

Look at Norv, who is gonna get a job because of they are related to Norv.

That is just life.  I would wager the majority of this board would be working in some capacity for the Panthers if their granddaddy owned the team.

I don't see where Hurney ever had less than 7 picks... he may have made some bad ones but your math is still off and if that is your premise then you are wrong and your point is wrong...

Somebody had to be fired for him to get the job.

It's one thing to get a job because of family, but another if someone else has to be moved out of the way for it to happen.

meh.  Happens all the time.  I'll sit the outrage out on this one.

There are 32 NFL teams.  I'd wager all 32 employ family and have moved people around for them.
