I agree with you on Starr if he's expecting a big payday. Thing is, I'm in favor of letting Norwell walk too.

Check out Spotrac's projected market value for Andrew Norwell below.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/andrew-norwell-14802/market-value/

We can't possibly afford to pay him this much money with all of the holes on our team.

Calculated Market Value

Market Value

  • 5 yrs, $58,924,976
  • Avg. Salary: $11,784,995
  • NFL Rank: #66
  • G Rank: #2

Letting Cam Newton get hit more isn't a option. You have to pay him unless there is a viable option behind him and there's not.

So have an interesting question for anyone that can answer it.

Obviously more money available in free agency= better players acquired. Knowing that the QB salary is a large part of this, and that NFL owners are all billionaires, what are the rules/why can't an owner and QB agree to take the vet minimum but have the QB sign a massive contract as the public faces of the businesses that they run?  Could Cam theoretically take a million dollars a year from the Panthers(opening up tons of cap space) but sign a 20m/yr contract with Bojangles? Could you use this to circumvent the salary cap?

I'm 100% sure there are rules in place preventing this but I don't know what they're called and would be appreciative if someone could enlighten me.

Norwell can be replaced via the draft, FA, or Taylor Moton (last year's 2nd round pick) who is capable of playing the guard our tackle position.

The contracts for the Kalil brothers and Turner average over $10mil per year. That's 3/5 of our starting O-Line. You can't have another 11 mil invested in another starter and fill the holes we have at HB, DE, S, CB, WR, and TE.  Kalil is retiring after the season so we need to start looking for a replacement at Center and we need depth at tackle if we loose Starr. You can't keep everbody you want with the restrictive salary cap in the NFL today.

Math isn’t right. All caps are the same, so how is 26.5M 19% and 22M 12-13%. Stafford is 20% more so if Brady’s numbers are correct Stafford would be 14.4-15.6%. That said Brady’s contracts have absolutely helped the Pats out. There’s some under the table payments going on there.

Not every team uses all their cap, not a single team uses the exact same amount , percentage could be of used %

For example: everything is good in Philly now but how's that dline going to look in 2 seasons when you have to pay Wentz top tier money.

Actually everything isn't good for them next year. As of right now they are over the cap for 2018, and they have several FAs they will want to keep, as well as after pay draft picks and any outside FAs they want to add. Their cap situation is pretty poor right now and that's without Wentz' contract, which will be huge when it comes very soon. One quick way they can clear cap room next year is moving Foles (saves them like $5M I believe) but otherwise they'll have to cut some talented players or let some talented players walk. It's the nature of the salary cap beast.

In addition to brandon's point, there is cap carry over from the year before for every team, some have nearly none and some have over $10M. Creates a somewhat considerable difference in each team's salary cap in one particular season.

Ironically, Foles is probably the one guy you really don't want to move in the off season. There is no guarantee Wentz is going to be ready for training camp or even to start the season. You can weather that ok if Foles is the backup, who is at this point the best backup QB in the NFL.

I think you underestimate Norwells skills.
