Ted Ginn 2.0

I'm of the thought that we need an outside wide receiver that compliments Fun with speed and the ability to win deep.  That moves Samuel into the slot where his quickness and speed can create huge separation (McCaffery can do this too) especially with the field being stretched by that outside speed.

I think you are going to see Turner utilize Samuel in the Slot and on the outside.   His speed will compliment Funchess and also help Olsen do what he does best.

I don't think it was coincidence that Funchess was performing well before Samuel got hurt and after the KB trade.

I think Byrd and Samuel have enough to pencil in as 3rd and 4th WRs.  Byrd, for what ever reason, seems slower than I'd expect on the field. Samuel seems a bit shiftier than Teddy to me - which makes sense; he was a running back at times. If there is any belief that these guys can provide consistant deep speed, then that has to make a signing like Mike Wallace, or Torrey Smith after he gets cut, a little less likely.

I agree that Funchess is no more than a #2. - probably a pretty good one. I REALLY want a real, professional, legit, #1 WR like Allen Robinson. Having seen the same offseasons play out that you guys have, I REALLY don't think that will happen via free agency. I'd be content with another #2 WR via free agency - Lee, Hurns, Jordan Matthews etc. Let Shepard walk. Let Bersin Walk. Spend one of the top few picks at Wideout.  Spend another top pick at TE - I'd be extremely happy with  Fumagalli, Schultz, or Goedert out of South Dakota St. I know it won't happen because of needs elsewhere but I could think of worse things than to spend two of our top 4 picks at TE and get Schultz and Goedert.

I believe Ridley is the best WR in the draft and would do wonders for this offense if we go that direction. He reminds me a lot of AB, not overwhelming big but has the vertical, speed & route running ability to play anywhere on the field.

I agree, I'm more referring to his "primary position".  Turner is smart so he will move him all over the formation.  Shepard was not the player for the outside so Samuel was used there more frequently then I think the team wanted to.

Samuel was drafted to play in the slot, and apparently the coaches (and then GM) believe that he  is well suited for that position being that he was drafted so high,  so I don't  necessarily see him as a Ginn replacement. Byrd made a few strides,  though he disappeared for a good stretch of the season.  That,  along with his injury history,  does not make me feel secure about him being Ginn's replacement. We need another guy. Last season told us that.

Weakness: route running

for curtis samuel? What the hell are you smoking, did you see the routes samuel was running? they were NICE and NATURAL. If anything, leave it as a question mark since we haven't seen a lot of him in a game, but to list route running as a weakness for samuel is ridiculous.

I haven't seen enough of Samuel, but from what i've seen he looks good. I REALLY like Byrd, he's shown he has intangibles, great hands from what we've seen, good route running, good speed. I really want to see more of Byrd. I'm not sure either of them are quite as fast as Ginn, but they're certainly close enough to be a threat to burn you which is all they need.

Another thing I like: Byrd had a 42 inch vertical and 10 foot 11 inch broad jump. At 5'9, and with the intangibles byrd has shown, he seems real steve smith-ish to me. REALLY like byrd. He definitely needs a lot more playing time.

I’d say the answer....is not on the roster

For the sake of discussion--

Have you seen enough from our  second-round, very athletic, WR who had hamstring injuries in camp and was out most of the season---and was showing promise when he suffered a season-ending ankle injury---to give up on him?

I guess I have been smoking experience and knowledge.  He was a RB/WR hybrid in college, so he admitted himself that route running was an area he was working on---are you seriously saying that his routes need no work because they "nice and natural?"  What the hell does that even mean?

He had (like many rookies) problems getting out of the jam and not tipping off his cuts.  He gets good separation out of the break and he is quick--which is what you see.  Sure, he was nice and natural,  but the little things that separate the Jerry Rices  from the Dwayne Jarretts are in the subtle details.

I’m not giving up on him.  He wasn’t a vertical threat in college and IMO he wasn’t drafted to be that for us.   I think he was drafted to be a Swiss Army knife to work out of the slot and backfield.  I have high hopes for him.

We need someone to take the top off a D

Funch, Byrd and Samuel are all keepers

We need a veteran that can reliably get open for cam. Doesn't need to be a superstar.

We desperately need young talent at DE, S, C and OT though

Yes.  And he does not need to be a deep threat if Byrd and Samuel can get deep effectively.  The basic point of the thread.
