Eagles rode receiving makeover to Super Bowl berth. Should Panthers try that route?

"Many of the issues that plagued the Panthers passing game last season were issues for the Eagles in 2016 – until they made a series of personnel moves to fix them.

If the Panthers make upgrading their receiving corps an offseason priority – as people both inside the organization and outside (former NFL coach Bill Cowher) believe they should – the Eagles laid out an effective blueprint for doing so."

On the first day of free agency last March, the Eagles signed speed receiver Torrey Smith and former South Carolina and Chicago Bears wideout Alshon Jeffery, whom safety Malcolm Jenkins describes as a “premiere receiver who demands attention on every snap.”

The makeover continued through the summer. Dorial Green-Beckham, who struggled to gain separation in his lone season in Philly, was waived in June.

The final move came during the preseason, when the Eagles traded slot receiver Jordan Matthews, who’d been dealing with a knee issue, to Buffalo for cornerback Ronald Darby.

The Matthews trade allowed Pederson to move Nelson Agholor, a first-round pick in 2015, to the slot, which is a better fit for his skill set."

Unfortunately, we didn’t pick the right year to need serious upgrades at WR. Last year the Eagles took advantage of a very solid free agent WR class. The Panthers let their best WR walk and give similar money to a career special teams player who was arguably the worst WR in the NFL last year. The only receiver worth a damn will most likely get tagged and the rest of this FA pool is trash. Thanks Gettleman. I hope Samuel turns into a pro bowler next season.

I would call what the Panthers need more than just a makeover

This year was prime pickings for us if we would have had given Cam the arsenal.  I feel we had a lot in place to make a run.  Truly think it was as big of a missed opportunity as the SB run.  

Sure, we got CMC and Samuel but we did not make a concerted effort to assemble given offensive talent around Cam, yet again.

In 2016 Torry Smith had 20 receptions on 49 targets for 267 yards and 3 TD for the 9ers.  

In 2016 Alshon Jeffery had 52 receptions on 95 targets for 821 yards and 2 TD's for the Bears.   

These stats aren't awesome.   I think we can match it.

This league is not driven by receiver play. The two best receivers in the modern era, Moss and TO weren’t battling for the Super Bowl every year. Foles rode a record into the playoffs and played a pussy ass Falcons team and an overmatched team with no QB in NFCCG. The motherfuger stumbled into the game. Other than that, y’all know this is a QB driven league. Receivers don’t win Lombardi’s.

for real though. We couldve kept Ginn , signed Desean Jackson, AND signed whitworth instead of Kalil. Also couldve drafted Lattimore and either Dalvin Cook , Kamara, or Kareem Hunt. Last offseason and the draft from a short term basis were a disaster. Its actually incredible we even made the playoffs with the poor roster choices and bad coaching combined, its a testament to the greatness of Cameron Newton

You're one of the many who underrate recievers importance, did you watch the games this season and most of Cams career? Can you imagine if he had better WR who can actually catch and get seperation consistently? They dont have to be game breaking hall of famers , but having good WRs instead of trash WRs makes a huge difference.

QB's throw to the receivers, they work hand in hand unless you got a run game that's super dominant. We need better production from our WR corp

We can still massively upgrade the roster this year. It all depends on what Hurney is willing to do in the offseason. 

We could cut Shepard and Bersin, then sign Mike Wallace veteran speed WR  in free agency. Then we have the option of trading for another WR, or drafting another WR, OR getting another one in free agency if Wallace's contract is resonable.  There's a mulititude of good WRs we could possibly trade for. 

The draft class for WRs is admittedly not great but I like  Anthony Miller and Dante Pettis alot in the 2nd or 3rd rounds would be perfect. 

Or we could just sit on our hands or continue to keep scraping the bottom of the free agency barrel in continuing to bring in sub par WR talent. I think our problem in the recent past is we are bringing in too many "Project" WRs (Armanti Edwards was a QB, Funchess was a TE, KB was big but slow and questionable passion for the game/WR technique , Samuel was a RB primarily, and CMC is a RB). We need to stop dicking around and bring in dudes that can separate, run good routes, and most importantly CATCH THE FOOTBALL.

WR isnt the only thing we need this offseason. I'd say we need 2 good WRs, a good vet CB thats not near the end of their shelf life,  a good young saftey, and a young power RB. Thats at least 5 players.

Definitely, and not only that but they went and got Ajayi too when the opportunity presented itself.  Nothing but respect for going out and getting those things done.
