WTF? They will save a ton of money and cap room and the talent is a wash. I love the move.

Since we don't know the details of the deal (it hasn't actually been signed yet I think), we don't know what cap space the Skins will save.  But the odds are that Cousins and Smith will have similar cap numbers.  And they will have to bring in another corner back, either thru free agency or the draft.  If they have to bring in a free agent, there is a good chance he will be more expensive than the rookie they traded.  And they lose a draft pick.  Sounds like a losing deal for me, and its all because the coach and the front office couldn't get along with Cousins.  Of course,  if the on field play improves, might be worth it, but we will see.

How is that outbidding the Redskins?

Fuller + a 3rd round pick >>>>> a 2nd round pick

Plus, I'm not sure if that trade would've ever gone through even if the teams had agreed on trade compensation. I'm sure any trade would've hinged on Smith signing an extension and who could blame him if he refused to sign an extension with Cleveland?

Only way I see that as outbidding is if you don't count Fuller, but that's Mark Kay Cabot's opinion.

To be clear, Cabot is a Browns beat writer but she's no homer.

The 71 million guaranteed might be misleading.

Instead of serving as a one-year rental before hitting free agency, Smith also gets a four-year extension to stick around in Washington. We don't have specifics on the deal yet, but the former first overall pick is in line to reportedly take home $94 million, with $71 million in guarantees, though the deal can't become official until after the new league year begins on March 14. The word "guarantees" doesn't mean anything unless it's prefaced by "fully" or followed by "at signing," so take that number with a grain of salt.

This could be a concern...

Redskins | Alex Smith subpar versus NFC East
Wed, 31 Jan 2018 12:40:20 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has played relatively poorly against the NFC East in his career. In 18 career games versus the division Smith has averaged a scanty 217.4 yards and 1.2 touchdowns. Smith will be playing eight games in the NFC East.

Smith is coming off a career year in which he threw for over 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns. Furthermore, his yardage has increased each season since 2014. While he's not a reliable week-to-week No. 1 fantasy quarterback, he's a high-end backup option.

There's some conflicting opinion on whether the Bills would look at him.

Bills | Kirk Cousins won't see Bills' pursuit
Thu, 01 Feb 2018 06:19:06 -0800

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is unlikely to be pursued by the Buffalo Bills, in the opinion of beat writer Mark Gaughan.

Cousins will have many suitors if he hits the open market as expected. In the best-case scenario, he's an upper-tier QB1, and he could slot no further than the tail end of the midrange QB1 territory.

This is colossal stupidity from the Redskins. They gave an above average QB who is at the tail end of his prime a boatload of money and gave up one of the better young CBs in the NFL and a 3rd round pick to do it when they could've simply signed Cousins and had an arguably better, much younger QB.

Not to mention fuller
