not a  bad move by the redskins . they save alot of money and also cousins might be better but hes not much better than alex smith

it is a bad move.  They aren't really "saving" money.   They mismanaged it the entire thing until the point they were looking at 3rd year tag price.

Cousins wanted like 19m a year and 44 guaranteed when they started tagging him.  They said no, opted to pay him even more than he wanted in his deal in back to back years with the tag.   Now it was approaching the 3rd year of the tag.  They just bumbled the whole thing.

They basically now have Alex Smith, who is worse, and are going to pay him more than Cousins wanted when they started the mess.

Redskins want to draft their guy to develop. Alex Smith gives them a few years to do that.

They could have done that without paying 94 million to a guy who's 4 years older than their current quarterback and has never succeeded outside of Andy Reid's system.

He led SF to the NFC Championship game in '11 before being replace by CK in the middle of '12.

So they didn’t want to pay Cousins $25 a year, but are okay with a older QB who isn’t a upgrade and save $1.5? This reeks of desperation of a team who didn’t have a backup plan at QB

I honestly think Cousins had no intentions of signing a long term contract with Washington after all the crap that's gone on.  He want's to be somewhere where he's wanted, not somewhere where's they're just keeping him around just because.

Alex Smith was decent under Harbaugh but that’s besides the point.

We all know the Redskins messed this up years ago when they never signed Cousins to a long term deal. So now both sides are sick of each other and needed a fresh start. Cousins probably would have held out if he didn’t get a long term deal, which the Redskins clearly weren’t going to do so getting Smith at least buys them time.

Side note, trading that young corner means Josh Norman isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, for all those hoping he’d get cut and come back to Carolina.

Valid point, but that was under Harbaugh, who also made Kaepernick look good.

I've never believed that Smith was anything but a system quarterback, and it took a while just to get him to that point.

And honestly, it's hard to blame him.

We see probably only a small percentage of the actual dysfunction that goes on in Washington. Cousins is in position to see a lot of it.

This is colossal stupidity from the Redskins. They gave an above average QB who is at the tail end of his prime a boatload of money and gave up one of the better young CBs in the NFL and a 3rd round pick to do it when they could've simply signed Cousins and had an arguably better, much younger QB.

Skins have been in “draft the future” mode since RG3 washed out. They want a rent-a-QB while they find their future. I don’t disagree with the strategy especially if they can get a guy they think is truly the future.

I also think cousins is overrated and the Skins have a ton of talent. I won’t be shocked if Smith is able to compete in that division next year with Wentz coming off an injury.

WTF? They will save a ton of money and cap room and the talent is a wash. I love the move.
