Why can't you accept that NEITHER were good? Are you related to Dave in some way?  I've been watching the Panthers since 2001 btw but I appreciate your condescending know-it-all attitude.

One Word: Results

We had greater success under Gettleman than at any other period in Panthers history, and it's not even close.  If Jerry Richardson weren't a dumbass, he'd still be here and we wouldn't have to worry about having an unqualified GM again.

And if you've really been watching the Panthers since 2001, you should know better (especially after 2010).

All I know is Hurney always hit on first rounders even when we weren't drafting high which is more than we can say for Gettleman.

Does that include the years he traded them away for guys like Everette Brown?

And quick hint: Hurney had high picks more often than not.  Eight losing seasons out of eleven will get that for you.

And if you actually think guys like Star Lotulelei and Shaq Thompson are lousy picks, welp...

Yet we've never managed consecutive winning seasons. To me that says we have never had consistently good management. Sugarcoat it any way you'd like but the proof is in the pudding.

Never had consecutive losing seasons under Gettleman either. Tell me, can you say that with Hurney?

Had consecutive division titles under Gettleman even without the winning record.  Again, can you say that with Hurney?

Your pudding is a little spoiled.

If you want to celebrate a 7-8-1 record you are certainly entitled to do so.... Given a couple more years to run talent out of town and spend big on FA busts I feel confident Gettleman would have many losing seasons to his name. Lucky for him (and us) we will never know.

I'm not a Hurney apologist and have zero qualms about calling out his terrible decisions. The problem is that you have placed Dave on a pedestal and look at him as some sort of martyr. You can't be objective in this discussion because you can't handle critique of Gettleman.

Ah, so here we go.  yet another Steve Smith / Josh Norman fan, wanting to talk about something other than success on the field and then claiming someone who's zeroed in on results only isn't "objective".  Meanwhile, you're trying to argue that Marty Hurney is actually good at drafting, but you're "not an apologist".

Laughable.

Gettleman has another job now (and it didn't take long).  He's not coming back here, and I'd be fine with that if we got someone else who was competent. Unfortunately, we're stuck with Hurney (whom nobody else wanted) and our dips--t of an owner is looking to try and lock him in to the job long term.

That's reality.

Sad part there is nobody's ever talked, so all we can ever find is speculation.

It is kind of suspicious that the firing occurred after the racial incident with one of Gettleman's scouts.

I'd love to know the full details, but the only things we can say for certain is Gettleman has another job, Jerry Richardson has been shown to be both incompetent and lecherous, and a guy nobody else wanted is back in charge.

Oy...

You hyping up 7-8-1 as a good thing is what's truly laughable here. If results are so important than surely you can admit never having consecutive winning seasons is unacceptable and not the sign of competent management.

I did look up his drafting and free agent history prior to the strike, back before it happened (likely around 2006 or 2007 or so).

It's why I soured on him.

in 2006 and 2007 he drafted Deangelo Williams, John Beason, Charles Johnson, Ryan Kalil and James Anderson. Hell pretty much every GM in the NFL wishes they'd come out of two drafts with that much talent. Maybe your thinking of 2009 and Brown debacle.....
