I'll grant that players and coaches rarely say anything bad about guys that were fired. It's always just stuff like "we wish him well and we thank him for his time here but we need to go in a different direction blah blah blah".

But let's be real, here. Shula was not good at his job, and Shula being bad at his job affected Stewart's ability to do his job (and everybody else's on that offense too).

He's not saying anything here that doesn't lend to what we already know. And the fact that nobody's called him despite there being numerous offensive coordinator openings tells me that it's no secret in the NFL either.

I agree 100%.  However, no need to state the obvious if it could backfire and make you look like a tool for saying it.  Funny how quickly Shula followed JR out the door--relates to what we (you and I) were saying recently about the JR-Shula connection.

Good for Norwell,.. get all you can. No loyalty when it’s your paycheck, teams have no loyalty and neither do fans,..

on that note, who can we replace him with?

This is a very talented and deep interior linemen draft class. That is why I could easily see Norwell being let go. I don't think it would be wise to lay out another monster OL contract when we currently have 3 of our 5 OL with large contracts. That is one big reason why I think it would be wise to keep Star instead of Norwell, if it did come down to that choice.

It would be great to keep them both, but we don't have that kind of money to tie up.

What you posted pretty much sums up why Norwell will likely be playing for another team in 2018. The NFL can be a cutthroat business, but hard decisions have to be made and with a salary cap you can't keep everyone you'd like. Unless Norwell took a huge hometown discount the Panthers really can't afford to bring him back.

We need some maulers up front if we consider ourselves to be a power rushing team. Getting a kid out of college with a chip on his shoulder and some fresh legs could be just what we need to boost the running game. Even with Norwell last year, our rushing attack with our running backs ranked 31st when Cam's totals rushing totals are subtracted. We can't do much worse than that if Norwell does walk in the off season.

I'd be looking at drafting a guard (and a center to replace Ryan Kalil) in this years draft. If I couldn't get the guard I wanted in the draft, I'd strongly consider moving Taylor Moton inside for the 2018 season or bringing in a mid-tier FA and try to find one again the following season.

PS- Here's what G-Man said about Moton last year after the 2017 draft.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/12241/taylor-moton

Panthers GM Dave Gettleman said second-round OT Taylor Moton is "not a redshirt guy."

"He's talented, he's big, he's strong, he's powerful," Gettleman said. "He's a good enough athlete to play right tackle, and he's smart enough to go inside."

It would be awesome to see Moton get involved. Whether it is a replacement for Norwell or an upgrade at LT, I would like to see him get involved if he is capable of playing at a high level. It also keeps us from scrambling in the draft if Norwell does go elsewhere.

Norwell is the guy you let walk so other teams can regret overpaying.

IDK if it will really be heavy on regrets. I do think he is a top 10-15 guard in the league, so they will be getting a valuable piece. The problem is that we already have some serious money tied up in our other guard, so it is what it is.

Here is the way a GM will look at this:

Andrew Norwell= $12m in salary against the cap, top guard, still no place for Moton

Letting Norwell walk= A job for Taylor Moton that counts about $2m against the cap, a third round draft pick.  So essentially, If Norwell walks, the Panthers get compensated, save $10m in cap space, and put a second-round draft pick in his second year in the LG spot.

------

About Star (off topic)

Star= $9m or so in salary against the cap, 330 lb Butler still plays second wave 3 technique

Letting Norwell walk= 330 lb Butler moves into starting rotation as NT (perhaps his best position); 3rd round comp pick can be used on a rotational 3 tech.

Well, you just convinced me to let Norwell go, and I've been all in on re-signing Norwell (let Star walk). After reviewing Moton's draft analysis,, I see he can easily play guard. I really thought he would make a great, athletic tackle. Dude has a great football IQ and we need to get him on the field.

As much as people hate Kalil, I think we’re better off with one change on the OL instead of two (move Morton to LT and a new LG). There were times when Kalil was competent. I just hope he builds on it and plays at a higher level every game. You could tell early on that he wasn’t in sync at all. When the entire OL got better at run blocking he was actually looking good and opening holes by doing the right thing. Anyway, just think trying to change out LG and LT would be a mistake.

I have to disagree on that. Matt Kalil has only had one good season in his career and, statistically, this was one of his worst ever. I don't think there is much hope for him to magically become better, he is always going to be a bad player. If there is an option to replace him with a better player, we should do so. Perhaps in the scheme there are some things we can do to hide his flaws, and hopefully we can do a better job of that, but that will still be the biggest and most glaring weakness on that offensive line.

For those banking on a comp pick if we lose Norwell will likely be disappointed.  We have several other needs such as S, DE, WR, and OL depth and will certainly use the money we saved on Norwell to fill some of those needs.  And that will give us more gains than losses, most likely costing us the comp pick.

Even losing Star, Dickson (who I actually think we will re-sign), and one or two of our other minor FA's as well might not be enough to get us a pick.  At best, we might get a late round comp pick, but I highly doubt we'd get a 3rd.
