He literally just brought in Norv Turner.

Norv and Ron are buddies who go way back to say the least. Add in the fact that Ron considered/brought in exactly zero other candidates for the OC job, and the fact that Norv has no interest at all in ever being a head coach again, and there ya go.

You aren't actually foolish enough to think that Rivera fired Shula without already having Norv Turner in mind as the replacement, are you?

I'm fine with the Turner hire in general. But we need something different defensively. The status quo has led to hated rivals like the Saints passing us by in one offseason.

We just went from McDermott who blitzed rarely to Wilks who blitzed 45% of the time.  I think that had a lot to do with the Saints picking us apart defensively.

Washington is the right guy for this job.

Having an inconsistent pass rush to pair with a mediocre secondary is ultimately why we were picked apart even by teams with average QB's like the Jets.

Rivera has displayed a stubborn penchant for not evolving until he's either forced into a corner, or his job is threatened. Look at how he still plays not to lose on gamedays, look at how long it took for us to move on from Shula.

I hope Washington works out fine, I have nothing against him from a coaching perspective. But personally I'm just tired of the same status quo of hiring from within or ringing up old buddies instead of getting outside our comfort zone.

we’re kind of losing all our good position coaches like this

eric was doing really well developing guys and their techniques, making sure our front four was productive. i feel like we might see that production fall off like we did in the secondary when wilks had to step up.

Said it in the other thread. McDermott took nobody. Wilks looks to be taking half the staff.
