Trying to fiqure out the defense we have here

So according to many talking heads, we had a good defense. I would classify it as mediocre at best. Anyone who has watched this team knows what I mean. Is it the personal, the scheme, coaching, or a combination of the above?

The dbs give 10 yard cushions on 3rd and 4 , can’t cover man to man and have no ball skills    Coleman is abysmal in coverage.   Adams actually didn’t play bad considering.

Coleman needs replaced ASAP. And we need another db that can play

Coleman isn't the issue its the speed in the secondary.

If we get a tall & rangy FS similiar to Malik Hookers then CBs can play more press & take advatange of their size. Coleman should be moved to an SS role.

Colemans a scrub who just rode the coattails of Josh Norman taking away half the field in 2015 . Hes whiffed on plenty of tackles this season and was terrible at SS in 2016.

Coleman didn't have a great year but I don't think he's the lynch pin.  We need faster corners.  I do not buy the logic that the corners give such a huge cushion because the safety sucks. Norman played right on the line with Coleman and Boston at safety.   Coleman had 7 interceptions in 2015.  When Bradberry or Worely have seven, then we can start blaming other secondary.   https://nflbreakdowns.com/2016/05/kurt-colemans-seven-interceptions-2015/2/

I can't edit my post, is that because I'm a newbie?  Anyway, I forgot to mention the Coleman also had 2 interceptions in the playoffs that year.

Sooo u want to move Coleman to SS where he sucked the year before.

The lack of speed comes from Coleman he can’t cover half the field. Norman made him what he was one year other than that might as well have Boston back there

My comment about the dbs playing 10 yards off on 3rd and 3-4 has nothing to do with the safeties lack of speed. It’s a dig at the dbs lack of coverage skills and the defensive scheme.

I don’t know why every OC in the  NFL doesn’t just throw 5-6 yard passes right in front of Worley and bradberry all the way down the field.  I’ve never seen either one jump a route like that.

But what we sorely lack is a very good safety. A great safety would make Worley and bradberry look like adequate DBs

Rivera's entire philosophy revolves around running the ball to increase time of possession so that the defense isn't on the field as much so that they are "fresher" which, according to those of this philosophy, should result in a better and more consistent defense.

The problem with Rivera's philosophy is that he executes the "run the ball and increase time of possession" part but it doesn't result in the outcome that he is looking for.  Rivera's defenses at Carolina, in his 7 years as head coach, have only been in the top 10 of the NFL in scoring defense twice.  All other years they've either been dead in the middle or near the bottom.

Which totally shatters his philosophy.  If you're going to sacrifice dynamic offense and the ability to score points for "ground and pound and run the clock", the second part of the formula, i.e. solid defense, HAS to come through or you just produce mediocrity.

Which is an excellent adjective to describe Ron Rivera.

Our backend isn't right and hasn't been since Norman, Peanut & Harper left.

We'll need a stud at FS which will help the dbs a little, but we also need another guy at CB who can help the safeties.  Chicken or egg we need both.  It would nice to draft a safety.  I wanted Hooker in last year''s draft.
