Panthers change in special teams coaching staff

McGaughey, who oversaw a productive special teams unit in 2017, opted not to sign a contract rollover last offseason and had begun exploring other opportunities, sources said. McGaughey has interviewed for a position with Cleveland and is expected to meet with Giants general manager Dave Gettleman about joining New York’s staff, according to one of the sources.

Looks like it was his decision.

So he might get a look in New York...interesting.

Of course they have to make Shurmur official first, and it's possible Shurmur may want someone else.

Browns already hired an ST coach so that's not happening.

I gotta give kudos to McGaughey here.  Even while he was "pursuing other opportunities" it seems like he was still giving us his best. That doesn't always happen.  A lot of guys with one foot out the door just half ass it (*cough* John Fox).

Yes, but the fan base is excited, so there is that

Oh, I'm not criticizing.  Just the opposite.

One of my biggest complaints about Rivera was that he'd lost his edge.  He was too willing to hang on to the status quo rather than look for improvement.  Perhaps the pending change in ownership has made a difference there.

Granted, as LP said, this move was actually McGaughey's choice.  But Shula and Dorsey were a much bigger deal.

There are still areas where I'd like to see better coaching (secondary mainly) but overall my opinion of Rivera is improving.

Not surprised.

Why are you not surprised? It's quite rare for a coach to walk from his job for the same job somewhere else. Quite curious as to McGaughey's reasoning for wanting out of Carolina. And it's not ownership change because he was looking around a year ago and there's no chance he knew anything about that (heck JR likely didn't even know then).

Well, we know he didn't wanna be here. We don't know the reason and there are no obvious reasons that would have been known last year.

The most logical conclusion is that he didn't like the situation here for whatever reason.
