Report of Sean Payton taunting Viking fans confirmed to be true

It's been reported by Jonathan Jones, confirmed by Vikings players, and yes there's photographic evidence...

News of the alleged taunt crept out late Sunday night, but I dismissed it as fan fodder that had no evidence. If all those cameras inside U.S. Bank Stadium couldn’t catch the head coach doing this, in my opinion, it didn’t happen. But Tuesday morning we woke to the news—first reported by former Vikings linebacker Ben Leber—being corroborated by still images.

And the coup de grace?  Payton fessed up to Saints reporter Mike Triplett.

This guys a grade a douchebag. That’s why his players act like the way they do.

"Douchebag" does tend to be the first word many people use to describe Payton.

This particular incident will go down as one of the most poorly timed choices ever.

Can’t imagine the NFL is happy about this ..would love to see some sort of discipline...just to let him know it’s not ok

Not a violation of policy.

If they punished people just for being douchebags, Payton would have faced discipline a long time ago.

Why is it not ok? If he wants to focus on getting into it with fans instead of coaching, let him. I don't see the problem other than him looking like a fool.

It was great playoff fun watching them jog their asses back onto the field after that final TD that put them on the couch for next week. I tell you the Saints were more cocky this year than ever and it starts with that piece of crap coach!

He’s the face of a multi Billion dollar NFL franchise ...taunting fans isn’t exactly In the job description. Players have been fined for giving fans the finger and whatnot . How come coaches are exempt ?

There's nothing profane about the choke symbol or the Vikings' skol thing.

That was my fav moment ... them having to come back out with their tails between their legs for the PAT. And they sent out the injured punter too. I like seeing arrogant people humbled in general

Correct.

Payton may be an a--hole, and I think a coach taunting fans or opposing players is stupid, but nothing he's done would be severe enough to constitute a violation of the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy.

Since they don't currently have an Anti-Douchebag provision on the books, judge rules "no violation".

    • No one is allowed to criticize XL unless you want serious clap back. He’s just one of those players that is immune to criticism on this board. But sorry that I don’t expect week in and week out drops, body catching, jumping for every ball when you don’t have to, horrible spatial awareness from a 1st round WR. He has so much to work on that it’s insane these issues didn’t drop him to atleast the 3rd round during the evaluation process. To make matters worse, the best RB today was a 4th round RB we could’ve waited later for and gotten someone like Cooper DeJean who filled a need in the 2nd who a lot of posters were pounding the table for including me.
    • Keywords there "Playoff offenses".  They might be the a huge piece, but in every case there, they are not the only piece.  might be a good run game, good QB, or great coaching.  Meanwhile yes we have a good RB, but we're still like 24th in Rush YPG.  Other Recieving options?  basically all rookies.  QB?  A guy who was benched after 2 games and just now learning the NFL.  Hell we have a rookie coach.  It. Takes. Time.
    • His route running has improved as the year has gone on, but the gator arms show up every week. From all accounts he works his ass off, so let's hope he continues to do so this offseason to improve his hands catching.
