2017 Case Keenum reminds me of 2003 Jake Delhomme

Both were unheralded as previous starting quarterbacks (Rams/Saints respectively), both weren’t supposed to be starters on their “new” teams, both play with stud defenses, Stefon Diggs = young Smitty, both have that gunslinger mentality...what say you?

Here’s hoping the Vikes can get to Super Bowl LII. Would love to sit back and cheer while being reminded of my 2003 Panthers team!

Jake was never a full time starter for New Orleans.  He was backup to Aaron Brooks.

Saint fans insisted Brooks was better even after Delhomme took off with us. but Delhomme outlasted brooks as a starter.

(Jake never quite mastered that empty hand throw that Brooks did so well) :)

Thus, being unheralded. I believe he got 2 starts in New Orleans, probably due to injury, and Keenum definitely got more opportunities to start for the Texans and Rams. Still, there’s something about these two QBs that feels eerily similar. If the Vikings and Pats play in the Super Bowl, it’ll certainly be reminiscent of SB38 for me.

Case makes some head scratching retard throws trying to prolong possessions.

I agree.

Edit:   Since its a meme at this point...

i like Kenum. He has that Russell Wilson factor where he escapes crazy sacks and finds guys and the defense is left like wtf. But, he can make some head scrathing plays like "why the fug would he theow that?"

Perfect for a team with a good running game and defense

Keemum as been amazing.  Losing Bridgewater and then Bradford had to sink their hopes quite a bit.  And as you pointed Jake and Keenum are unheralded.  I am pulling for him.   He definitely increased his paycheck for next year.

Jake got a couple of starts here and there but mainly a backup.

Hope they could kill the Patriots in the Superbowl for the Panthers and finish the unfinished business for our 2003 team.

Jake never getting a fair shot in NO is the reason I'm a panthers fan.  I'm a Louisiana Ragin Cajun alum and Jake is a big deal there, so when He left New Orleans, I said I'd be a fan of wherever he landed, and here I am.

I thought about this while I was watching the game. Also, the Diggs catch is similar to the x clown. Theyre also playing the Eagles without their starting QB in the NFC championship game. If they play New England in the SB im going to be cheering them on like they were the Panthers. Give NE a taste of what small market teams can do.

Jake was right up there with my favorite Panthers of all-time prior to his meltdown...  he was underrated physically as an athlete and really did embody all those intangibles that can't be measured...  I'll never forget him throwing that TD in the Superbowl and talking poo to Rodney Harrison...  it was beautiful lol.

There may be some similarities, but I think It's a little different.  Smitty was much more physical than Diggs is.  Keenum also plays differently than Jake did, as Jake was more of a gunslinger-type, and Case is a more creative, measured type of passer.  I watched a lot of Case in college and I was surprised he went underrated.  I thought he was a sure-fire starter in the NFL, and had a lot of potential in the right system, so I'm happy to see him doing well.  Goes to show you how horrible Jeff Fisher and his staff were - he almost ended Gurley, Goff, and Keenum's careers before they ever really began.

All that being said, I think the biggest similarities with Jake and Smitty is just that it seems like a magical run, just like 2003 was for us.  I'm pulling for a Vikes and Jags Superbowl...  then I'd probably be happy for whichever team won.

    • Don't look now, but a 3-game win streak, including 2 on the road in back-to-back games. The Canes haven't won 3 straight since the middle of November, over 2 months ago.  Canes held Dallas to 23 SOG, with a lot of those coming in a late game flurry. Canes have had some difficulty keeping SOG down to where we're used to seeing them. The Dallas game was reminiscent of the defense we saw early in the season- standing teams up at the blue line and making zone entry a real pain in the pads.
    • Agreed with a lot of this. Couple thoughts, especially towards the OL/future cap things... First, I hope Bryce is good enough to command being paid a Top 5 QB salary. Great news for us if so. But as of now, I think he'd be in that mid-tier range, so that $60 gets cut to 30-40. Baker to Stafford range. Obviously the cap will go up and $60 might be the new mid-tier, but either way I think we're fine here. He either continues to ascend and gets paid Top 5 money because he's that good and thank God. Or, he shows he's Baker level, gets a competitive offer that's outside the Top 10, and we're "saving" money (but also paying someone who may not be the "guy" in that scenario).  The OL is the biggest thing going forward IMO. You're 100% right here about the need for an OL, paying them, % of the cap, etc. Which is why in the next couple of drafts, we HAVE to absolutely nail a couple OL picks. We can't realistically tie up that much money in our OL. So we better turn into the Cowboys the late 2010s and constantly have a revolving cycle of a couple highly paid pieces, with drafted guys who step up and take their place once we have to move on. One highly paid OT, one highly paid OG, and then find rookie deals or cheaper vets that fit well.  Point being, we're teetering on the edge of a few foundational pieces being here now. IF, and history isn't on our side here, we can nail the next couple of drafts...we're in a good spot when it comes to the cap and future. If we don't find a couple of defensive cornerstones and find reliable OL depth that can take over for Hunt/Moton/Lewis as they age or contracts balloon...that's when we're right back in hell IMO. No pressure, Dan.
