Fair enough, but AB has had the luxury of playing with arguably the greatest QB/RB tandem in the league in big Ben and Bell.

Imagine Hopkins on the steelers

Come on,  man.  You could probably say that about a lot of good receivers.  One thing about being a true WR1 is that you produce regardless of where you are or who you play with.

Josh Gordon put up over 1600 yards in 12 games with a back-up to third string type of QB in an offense where he didn't really have any help. That's beast-like,  and that's what a true WR1 looks like.

AB is an absolute freak and so is Gordon ... and so is Hopkins. Just saying.

All 3 to me are interchangeable.

Yeh Hopkins gets forgotten a lot, but he’s a game wrecker, definitely not a choker like Julio. He’s had poo for quarterbacks lately but still balls out.

id Love to have a Nuke.

If I (average football fan) were to define the traits of a #1 receiver, I'd create a list like this:

1. Great hands that catches balls consistently.

2.  Wins when you need him to.

3.  Makes plays when the game in on the line.

There are lots of different guys who use different talents to do this.  We just need someone who can be a consistent play maker.

Talent wise I think Gordon Beckham and AB are the cream of the crop.  There are plenty of #1's but those guys are imo the most talented.

In Gordon's first game back he was getting loose on Casey Hayward, who's an elite CB.

I want a guy who demands the ball when we need a big play.

when I look at the #`1 WRs in the NFL--Brown is easily #1 of the #1s.  Then you have Jones, Jordy Nelson, Michael Thomas, Beckham Jr (maybe), Cooks at NE (maybe) TY Hilton (maybe), Mike Evans (maybe) AJ Green.  There is one thing I see common to all of them---

A very accurate QB.  I do not see a #1 with a mobile QB.

So maybe we will never have a true #1 WR who can match these standards.  If we trade or sign a free agent, we should not expect similar results here.  Maybe with Norv Cam will be more of a drop back or more accurate (mechanics) but running impacts the timing--it gives the QB a third or fourth option that the drop back qb does not have.

Tom Brady:  Option #1 (covered), Option #2 (covered), check down (not there), throw away.

Cam Newton: Option #1 (covered), Option #2 (covered), check down (not there), Run!--not there, throw away.

Cam does not throw that much when he plants his back foot when dropping back.  If timing is right, that is when the WR should be breaking and have separation.  It closes rather quickly.  Cam sometimes tried to do too much and the window closes while he is shopping for a better play.

Not sure if this is all accurate, but I get these thoughts and ideas from the experts who comment on him.

#1 receiver is an overrated and useless discussion. I think Funchess has developed to the point he can be our leading wideout... but like anyone (except Steve Smith), he needs help. We're getting Byrd and Samuel back, but we can't count on them. Shepard should be gone. Clay and Bersin are interesting options but likely don't make a final roster except as a return specialist for Clay.

Going into next year, then, our receiver locks should be Funchess, Samuel, and Byrd. Cam trusts all three of them and all three played well down the stretch or before injury. We need to draft or pick up two more receivers and keep Clay or Bersin on standby in case someone gets hurt.

In short, we need a reliable playmaker opposite Funchess. That could be Byrd or Samuel, but we cannot count on either not being hurt. So WR needs to be a draft or free agent priority, or both.

See my point about the #1 wrs in the NFL.  Cam's style is not going to produces the same kind of WR...I agree with your points.  We need 1 WR and upgrade the backup TE spot and the OL needs some attention.  (If we keep Funchess, Byrd, Samuel, and maybe Clay/Bersin, I see one roster spot left.  We need to develop our youth...

Injuries? THat is a concern, but on paper, we need, as you said, one opposite Funchess.  Let's not forget that CMC  will catch 70 balls too.

Well I believe we need at least 2 receivers to replace 2 of ours.

We need guys who can beat man coverage, know how to find the holes in zone.

they need to make plays when the game is on the line,

thats plain enough—

I want to like Clay and Byrd but Byrd keeps getting hurt and Clay usually has bad hands, doesn’t adjust to the ball well either. Sheppard is garbage.

so 3 really. Bersin has little ability but he catches and plays smart, works hard. I would keep him ironically before the other 3.

in a perfect world we get 4 receivers and replace all 4 of them.
