McD initially hired Rick freaking Dennison.  That move last year showed the different offensive approach he wanted.  Shula was likely never even in consideration, at any point.

Listen here there is a long list of a tie on this. I was furthering Zods post when we initially hired him and couldn't get any more extreme in the ANTI Shula. If you even only paid a slight amount of attention to football at any level you knew Shula was a poo stain that no one but JR wanted.
